This week marks the 17th consecutive week of MHKmusic updates on this site. It has been very encouraging to see a growth of interest in the updates and in live music and entertainment in Manhattan, KS. The plan is to continue to increase the quality and completeness of these updates to encompass all live music in Manhattan and to be the number one source of live music news in town.

Now…on to the update:

This week share a song, poem or joke at Open Mic in the KSU Union on Monday. Auntie Mae’s will help bring the weird with The Deer on Thursday before bringing us back down to earth with The Jazz Ambassadors on Friday. The Hat is offering a double dose of country on Thursday and Friday. RC McGraw’s will also have country on Friday. You can get your bluegrass fix at The Wareham also on Friday. On Saturday Sisters of Sound will host DJ Spauhn during a huge consignment sale of records in excellent condition (this is a “you snooze you lose” kind of situation!). All the details you need are below!

@8:15pm Jason Boland and the Stragglers w/ Dalton Domino at The Hat

Since coming together in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Boland and his tightknit crew have sold more than half a million albums independently and earned a devoted following that’s swelled far beyond the band’s red dirt roots. At a Stragglers show, oil patch roughnecks, hippies, college kids, and intelligentsia all sway side-by-side like a traveling reincarnation of Austin’s Armadillo World Headquarters in its cosmic cowboy, Willie Nelson heyday.

While the Stragglers draw from rock and folk, make no mistake: they traffic in unfiltered, unfettered honky-tonk, raw and lean. Equal parts subtle, meditative, and snarling, and often wickedly funny, Squelch is a deeply rooted exercise in exhuming beauty by trading smoke and mirrors for what’s real.

$15 Ticket (GA); +$5 (Minors at door)

@9:30pm Jon Wolfe at RC McGraws

It’s world class country music from the American heartland, informed by the great singers that inspired Wolfe — like George Strait, Garth Brooks (a fellow Okie), Clint Black, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and Dwight Yoakam, to name a few — yet fired by his own contemporary energy and vision.

Wolfe’s music has been burning up the Texas Charts where he garnered six consecutive Top Ten singles (“Let A Country Boy Love You,” “That Girl In Texas,” “I Don’t Dance,” “It All Happened In A Honky Tonk,” “The Only Time You Call” and “What Are You Doin’ Right Now”), making Wolfe a “must see” act in the Texas touring scene. A seasoned performer, Wolfe has opened for some of Country’s biggest stars and has played more than 400 live shows over the past four years.

$10 Ticket (Pre-order); $15 (At Door)

@9:30pm Kathy Mattea featuring Bill Cooley at The Wareham Opera House

Grammy-winning bluegrass singer Kathy Mattea and her longtime collaborator, guitarist Bill Cooley, share one of Nashville’s most musically rich partnerships. The duo meets as old friends, welcoming you into “The Acoustic Living Room” to play songs near and dear to their hearts – including Mattea’s beloved classics such as “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses.”
