My Rock signed by Al Simmons (I collect rocks!)

in music •  7 years ago
Al Simmons is an award winning children's folk singer. Every Canadian knows him by name and he has been featured on Fred Penner's TV show and Sesame Street. He is known for producing music that helps the development of kids brains by simplifying the complexities of life. During a Music Festival, I ran into him biking around on a "cat-in-the-hat" style bike, he was drawing as much attention to himself as he could. I grabbed the nearest rock and asked him to sign it, I told him "I collect rocks". He replied, "So do I".

He wrote an entire song using single letters and digits for kids who normally can't read full words but can read the symbols. This also removes the language barrier allowing anyone watching live to sing along regardless of origin.

When he signed the rock, he told me that I was the first person he's done that for. I personally doubt it, but if so I'm honored. I watched his "I collect Rocks" music video as a kid more times then I could count. I have no idea how popular his music is in other countries, I'm genuinely curious.

I respect his hustle, and anyone who has seen his show live knows it is unlike anything else they've ever seen. His style is similar to doctor Seuss meets folk singer. Its honestly the trippiest thing I ever saw as a kid, especially live. I have alot of nostalgia for his work, but I understand if you might not. It might just be a Canadian thing.

My husband is Canadian and is totally into this guy and a couple others I've never heard of and I think are weird/goofy. But it's cute to see his devotion. :D

I can see the attraction. He's pretty clever. My 4 year old is captivated right now. I think I'll go find some more vids for him to watch.
