They explain how the sounds of Memphis music are reflecting these times of unrest.
4U recording studio is the birthplace of the single “Black Man” by Memphis native and singer-songwriter Brandon Lewis.
He said he is using his platform to share music that relates to the times we’re living in now.
“It is alright to make the songs we dance and groove to and just have a good time. But we also have a social responsibility,” Lewis said.
Lewis and grammy-winning producer, Black Elvis, wrote the song he said speaks from the soul.
Lewis said the words he used resonates with the death of George Floyd, but the timeline behind the pain in his music doesn’t begin there.
“We have been looking at things like this in the mainstream media since Trayvon Martin,” Lewis told.
If Martin were alive today, he’d be the same age as Lewis.
Trying to understand it all, Lewis shot the video at two iconic locations: Clayborn Temple and I Am A Man Plaza.
Porter said the power of the messaging is critical.
“If you look at the young talent we have. You don’t have to see David Porter any more because their talent stands on its own. If I am the conduit for that, then I am more than happy,” Porter said.
Lewis said, ”I think being a black man in America means responsibility. We have to be accountable for ourselves and start taking accountability for our peers and the black men around us and the black men we have to raise under us.”
Black Man is available and streaming everywhere.
