Punk – what the hell was that?
In October 1976, a radical new sound arrived: “Anarchy in the UK” – we were being incited to wave two fingers at the system by four blokes screaming at us.
“I know what I want and I know where to get it!” They were Punks. They were the Sex Pistols.

Not a bad little expose'. I just really have a problem with the following statement:
"The leafy suburbs of England succumbed to Glam Rock, Disco, Mainstream Rock and Abba.
Blink 182, Green Day and their like have kept the music alive but …"
The major labels decided punk rock was a little to wild and uncontrollable for them to be associated with so they quit signing them and the media ignored them. In no way did punk rock disappear. All around the world labels were formed, usually by members of a band, to release their own recordings and those of friends' bands. Labels such as Crass, Bluurg, Clay, SST, Alternative Tentacles, Mystic, to name just a small few. It's where the term DIY originated.
Not just labels either. Kids were putting out zines, often spending hours photocopying and hand stapling them then contacting record stores and clubs to see if they'd be willing to help with distribution.
Shows also were done largely by fans. Renting whatever hall you could find, making and hanging flyers themselves.
Punk rock and more importantly punk culture does not need major label contracts, mainstream media attention, or corporate attachment. The punk spirit still lives yes, but trust me, Green Day and Blink-182 had very little to do with it.

Great post @ebryans. I've always been a punk rock fan. When I was very young, a cousin of mine had a cassette. "Chipmunk Punk". Yeah, Alvin, Simon and Theodore got me into punk... so what.

Thank you for your reply!! Other than the Pistols, The Jam and The Clash who are almost mainstream, do you know the others? The Vapors track is one of my best tracks of all time - much better than the A side- Turning Japanese

I've heard everything here. Back when Grooveshark was a thing I'd turn the radio feature on, sit back and listen. Majority of these songs were on my favorites list.
