Sonic Youth - Catholic Block

Sonic Youth formed New York City

in 1981, and had a career through the American Hardcore Punk scene, into the world of underground rock of the late '80s, and eventually gained some mainstream success in the '90s when Nirvana helped open the door to major labels finding new acts in the world of college radio/underground scenes. Sonic Youth consisted of Thurston Moore (guitar and vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, guitar and vocals), and Lee Ronaldo (guitar and vocals) for the entire existence of the band, however, they went through a number of drummers before finally settling on Steve Shelley.

Listen to Catholic Block by Sonic Youth here.

Sonic Youth were known in the early

part of their career for using crazy noises and weird tunings to create a super experimental sound. However, with the album this track appeared on (Sister, 1987) they began embracing more "pop" structures which they interwove with the experimental/noise stuff. I am not sure how about this song/album in particular, but they were known to use wild unison tunings on guitars, like tuning 5 strings to F# and one to A, which created a really intense sound, even it was only a single note being played 6 times together.

Hope you enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!
