Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot
Guitar playthrough by YouTube user slackerVK
I know I shared a Sonic Youth song
recently, but I just saw this video and thought it would be really cool to share with you all. The guitar on this song (and album) is so interesting, strange tunings and noises, awesome chords and voicings that are super unique... This track is definitely my favorite on the album, it's a little less dark because of the major key, but it still has a strangeness to it that makes it really cool.
Check out the video here.
The tuning used here is
GABDEG, which is DEFINITELY not the craziest of their stuff... Some older songs use a bunch of unison strings, stuff like F#F#F#F#EB, which is limiting in chord complexity, but has a crazy tone with all the unison notes. I love the progression here, being able to watch it played close up shows how unique of a songwriter Thurston Moore was. Some of it feels like a rock/post-punk guitar, with a lot of suspended and addChord elements. It stays really driving the whole time though, and seems like it's a lot of fun to play. I should try some of these tunings out, it just requires stringing my guitar a little differently, so nothing is over- or under-tightened.
Hope you enjoy the video! All credit for the playthrough goes to slackerVK on Youtube!
