As a 90s kid the music I grow up with was very much the indie style British soft rock known as britpop, the more mainstream music scene was rather big with the infamous spice girls mania back in 1996,which while their wasn`t much wrong with it,it did mask over at time I feel some very good bands/track out at the time.
Anyways for those of you interested here are my favorite tracks from the late 80s-90s I hope you like my choices but let me know if you think I`v missed any.
Oasis don`t look back in anger, Listening to this in the summer of 1996 as a 8-9 year old is something I will never forget.A friend of mine who i still have contact with today visited a leisure centre that year close to wear I live now infact, and also the sister leisure centre to the one I currently work in.2 brave lads sung this in a lunch time talent show and one,we each got a tony Yeaboah or Robbie fowler poster at the end, needless to say we all went for the yeaboah poster.
Wonderwall,Second place is a tough one and it might well be the sentimental value of this song for me that put it here, but listening to that classic riff so shortly after wonderwall was musical history for me.In the height of oasis v blur I was very much an blur fan back then, but these to crackers might well have changed the course of that.
Stone roses Sally cinnamon, Keeping with the Manchester theme,a song released close to my birth, but also a song I liked at a very young age to seemingly forgot about for a while up until my neighbors played it one night.Such a personal song I find it usual for a britpop track. It has to be said I only really new stones roses later stuff for a while, which i am afraid to say I never thought was as good, none the less can`t take this one away from them.
The verve, bittersweet symphony ,A song about life,or at least many peoples realities at the time, the very fact that it questions to the very core in my view what you are choosing to do with life makes is so nice to listen to.Over time I have begun to learn though you don`t have to be a slave to money.
Cast, guiding star, the catchy upbeat track with such a nice video is definitely a keeper that I personally never tire of listening to,I recently saw cast play this live as I decided to take up an extra job at Leeds o2 accademy I was fortunate enough to be on front of house at the time so was able to take a few extra minutes to enjoy it.
The la`s,their she goes, again another tough one However the opening riff to this track gets me everytime, quite clearly this was a song about smack originally ,but I guess its each to their own in allot of ways as to what the meaning is.
7)Ocean colour scene,The day we caught the train,a catchy one that I enjoy often in the summer with a beer and a ****** Perhaps its the excellent guitar playing, butit gives off such a summer theme.
- James, all sit down, the iconic track that often got me sitting on the floor of fab cafe back in the day,a mellow meaningful track, know by most even if they don`t know the band that well.
9)Blur,country house, one of blurs many anthems, typically light hearted and fun, which common in blur tracks, although their usually was a rather deep meaning behind each track.
10)Pulp,common people,Once described as one for the netto generation, most can relate to some of the lyrics,i certainly think this is one for the alternative livers of life.
There are allot that have just missed out,and I can see myself changing my mind over the next few days, but let me know if I have missed any.
Peace
