Lyrics Meaning #42: Somewhere I Belong - Linkin Park

in music •  6 years ago  (edited)

There are some points in life when we feel underappreciated, and isolated from the reality brought about by injustice and painful experiences. It creates anguish and it controls our mind, and we want to get away from it because it makes the pain stronger.

Such theme was often part of any Linkin Park album, and this song even became the carrier of Meteora, and a lot of people found it relatable. People looks for the special place where they will be accepted, and where they can see they really belong to.

YouTube/Linkin Park

And I'd get lost in the nothingness inside of me
(I was confused)
And I let it all out to find that I'm not the only person with these things in mind (inside of me)
Lyrics

We go through a lot of confusion like which is which, and we feel lost because we cannot find the answers to the questions in our mind. If a person feels such, he is not alone. A lot of people in this world who are stuck in a lot of questions, and feeling the same pessimism. All you want to do is to escape it to feel better, but it's not helping.

I want to heal, I want to feel,
What I thought was never real
I want to let go of the pain I felt so long
Lyrics

With those painful experiences, we might not want to resent however, it is still present. All we want to happen is to be healed, feel relieved from all these pains. Even it's been long ago, yet it is still present and the scars remain.

Looking everywhere only to find that it's not the way I had imagined it all in my mind
Lyrics

To feel relieved, you go through a lot of process but it don't turn out the way we expected it to be. In the end, it will even end up to more frustrations and disappointments. The process continues, but it's only repetition.

I will never know myself until I do this on my own
And I will never feel,
Anything else until my wounds are healed
I will never be
Lyrics

You want to know yourself, but you will this by yourself. But it will not turn out that way because, in fact, you need help from others. Whatever you do, you cannot heal those pains by yourself alone. You still end up in anguish. Yet, you continue finding that place where you really belong.

Somewhere I Belong may sound similar to their tunes from Hybrid Theory, but it became a huge contribution to the huge first week sales of Meteora despite a peak at number 32 at the Billboard Hot 100. They were more of an albums artist at that time. It was a bigger hit when it reached number 10 in United Kingdom, courtesy of OCC. The music video was released only a few years before YouTube, and it had gained more than 141 million views at this moment.
