I'm going to use today to share my favorite things about 2017. It wasn't a great year but it had its special moments.
I spent A LOT of time listening/watching/obsessing/oogling Harry Styles and Ron Gallo.
I feel like these two artists could not be any more different.
HARRY STYLES
When I used to see that footage of those American girls screaming over the Beatles when they first came to New York, I thought "wow that's insane."
But I totally get it. I love his Bowie-Shania Twain vibe. He's this days Mick Jagger! I love his music, poppy-rocky-sexy. He's definitely writing music for him and not the boy band. He's always been more of a rocker-soul and I love who he's become. Reading articles, watching interviews and specials this year, has been a complete treat. Just last week, Late Late Show Host, James Corden, had a daughter! He called the most charismatic 23 year old on the planet to fill in. He did well, if he has his own show - i'd watch. Yes, Harry Styles, thank you for giving me something to smile about throughout the year.
RON GALLO
I found him around this time last year. He's from Philly, was in a band wrote a bunch of songs living in Fishtown and then moved to Nashville. In my opinion- his rips. Pure unapologetic rock music. I've listened to it 1000000x and I am not sick of it. One song, 'Why Do You Have Kids' is about all the still wild parents you'll see if you spent 10 minutes at the Girard station of the Market Frankfurt Line, a station I use nearly everyday.
I saw him and Naked Giants play at the First Unitarian Church last month. Modern Baseball aside, probably the best show I saw this year.
Between you and me, a funny sentence to write on the internet, I've been struggling with my tastes being validated this year. I spent the past 365 days telling myself, "it's perfectly okay that you like this, even though no one else around you does, because it makes you happy and that is all that matters."
Ya see, New Years Eve 2017 my friends and I had a huge lovely holiday party!
It was fabulous
My friend and I thought it would be a cool photo opportunity to print our favorite album covers from the year, take them off the wall and take pictures with them.
Pretty Cool Right?
So on this wall, my picks included
Vundabar, Parquet Courts, Descendents, Avalanches, Modern Baseball, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Margret Glaspy, Bruno Mars... Anyway no one at the party liked any of my picks. People only liked Chance the Rapper and that rapper and this other rapper. It was a pretty bad feeling to kick off the year. (Chance is cool AF don't get me wrong, I just felt bad)
Throughout the year I've been telling myself that what other people think about your interests don't matter.
I like what I like because it brings me joy and I shouldn't have to justify it anymore than that.
2018 - don't let people bring you down, do what you want, make yourself better, make yourself happy.
I like your music more than Chance the Rapper and
this other rapper
