Musical Market Friday!

in music •  5 years ago  (edited)

Week after week I tell @dswigle that I have forgotten to take any pictures of a market for her #marketfriday. Last Friday was no different. I said something like "I'd rather be dancing" to which the ever effervescent @dswigle replied "Make a market post out of dance! I'm sure you could do it!"

It just so happened I would be at the fabulous Maureen's Jazz Cellar in Nyack NY to experience Making Music Dance, an extraordinary band led by my dear friend and phenomenal tap musician, Heather Cornell, that very night.

"You know, I COULD!"

I felt me some powerful Steem Inspiration coming on.

This piano at the bar marks the spot of the best seats in the house at Maureen's Jazz Cellar in Nyack NY!

The cool people start lining up to get in well before a show starts. This night's show is the band Making Music Dance, and for a late show (10pm) it has drawn quite a crowd. Many of these people are musicians themselves, and several of those came quite far to see this show.

It may be a tiny club in the mostly sleepy town of Nyack NY, but Maureen's Jazz Cellar packs a musical wallop and is well worth the trip.

Here's the month's shows. By the way, the Tuesday night open mic is the best open mic in the world! The Budman (more on him in a bit) shuts people up even at open mic, so you have a roomful of musicians listening to you, and a house band to die for if you need one. There's nothing else like it. Come.

IMG_20190809_220227539.jpg

Down into the cellar we go. There's Brianne Higgins at the bottom - greeter, bartender, designer, schlepper, SIL to Maureen Budway (more on her in a bit) and co-owner - greeting and seating the crowd.

Nina. These guys are serious about music. I forgot to take pix of the several shots of Jerry Garcia strewn about the place, and if you're ever near Nyack on a Thursday, Maureen's Dead Night is the place to be.

IMG_20190809_221102263.jpg

That's David Budway in the middle, aka The Budman - greeter, bartender, schlepper, famed musician and co-owner - helping the band set up.

The lights dim and the Budman gives the spiel, which I am paraphrasing here: "No talking and I will shut you up if you try it (and he did at least once during this show), silence your phones, and see that portrait on the right? That's my sister Maureen Budway, who was a masterful singer of power and grace, gone from us for several years now, and we opened this club to honor her." Then he introduces the band and the band members.

This night's musicians are, from left to right, Tony Romano on guitar, Sylvain Leroux on flute and assorted noise makers, Heather Cornell on sand, floor, cajon and balafon, and Andy Alguire on balafon and congas.

The band humbly soaks up the love while David sets the mood.

And we're off.

I know nearly nothing about taking images, and for this post I've utterly failed to post one of those slick Dtube links as a video (even though I spent HOURS trying), so please go check out Heather and this band at https://www.manhattantap.org/.

And just like that, the evening is over and the Budman lovingly makes sure his marvelous piano is well tucked in for the night.

There are many many magical evenings of mind-blowing music from all over the world at this club, an international music market. I'm heading over there tomorrow for some middle eastern jazz.

Please join me!

This is my entry to @dswigle's marketfriday, where we all show and find marvelous treasures. https://steempeak.com/marketfriday/@dswigle/market-friday-goes-house-hunting

Notes: @thetroublenotes please have a show here!
To the writers among us (that's everyone), I apologize for all the cliches, this was WAAAY more work than I expected it to be, so I took the easy way out!

Looks like a fun place to be for the evening, Owasco. Great music and I like how Budman honours his deceased sister.

It's an AMAZING club. I am so happy it is here. The Budman is my music teacher! You have no idea how lucky that makes me.

This was absolutely a phenomenal piece! When I told you that you should make a post out of your dance tell her I was interested to see how you would approach that. Well, I must say that I was totally impressed and the little bit taken back by awesome your very first post for Market Friday was!!

I believe everybody on this platform is in love with music and this fit the bill for everybody's palette! Maureen's Jazz Cellar seems like the happening place and your pictures are gorgeous! The very first shot of the piano was awesome and I know I keep on using that word but oh my God this post is making me run out of adjectives!

Most people don't go through so much trouble for a post but I must say that you did such an extraordinary job and I am so tickled pink that you chose to join the challenge. I watched you know that you have set the bar High and that may intimidate you into never doing another one again. But, take a setback and realize that every single week to not be as amazing or you will never want to do it again! I loved it, I loved it, I loved it! I don't know how else to tell you!

Thank you for joining and I wish you a most extraordinary evening!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you! I'm thrilled you feel that way!
I learned a lot doing this, and I don't think the next one will take me quite so long. I'll pass up trying to upload to dtube for a while, which took up half a day.
And I enjoyed making it. These are my peeps. I was trying to do them justice. And #marketfriday. And you!
This contest attracts a LOT of people. I tried to read all the entries yesterday. and only got through about half. Very cool way to travel the world.

This was such a fun post and made me feel like I was right there!

High praise then! I look at my own work and wonder if it will interest anyone at all. Seems like this one made a nice splash. Thanks for dropping in!

Great post @owasco!! Maureen's Jazz Cellar looks like an awesome place to go for a night out! I can only add video to a post from YT on steemit. For DT, I make my post in DT with the video then edit on steemit to add more text and photos. I'm sure there is an easier way but that is how I do it. I'm not real tech savvy..lol. That is a beautiful portrait of your sister and I think your photos came out very nice! 💖

Thanks for stopping by and for the tips on videos. I'm hopeless at this point.
I got as far on DT as uploading a snap and couldn't get past that. Really frustrating! Someone told me to try to do it in an incognito window, another said I needed to clear cookies, now you tell me to make my post in DT. I have no clue what any of those things mean. lol.
I'll get there.
Nice to meet you!

You are welcome @owasco! I know that feeling. I only did maybe four posts on DT (Dtube) before giving up. Now if I add video, I just post it on my YT (Youube) then copy the link and add it here..much easier. I enjoyed watching the video of Heather and the band. Take care and nice to meet you as well! 🙂

Thanks for going to their website! How many people do that I wonder, actually go through the provided links. I do it as long as they are not an hour long!
I'll make an account on youtube and see if that helps me. I would like to post videos now and then, maybe even do an open mic contest here if I ever get up the nerve.

I find myself wondering the same thing when I post links.I hope it works out for you like that and you are able to post videos more easily. You are more brave then me..lol. I would happily listen though. 🙂

This looks like a real great place, and it looks like you had a great time there!!

Yes! Thank you for stopping in!
(am I the only one who finds the haiku bot annoying?)

Nooo! He is such a pain! Let's off him!!!! :)

I feel bad for the bot. It's so bad at haiku.

Omg lol!!

I just ignore him!!

This looks like a real

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Hahaha! Who knew??? :P

Ah, music! Music is the rhythm of life!

Finally a "market" about music but where no instruments are sold ... the atmosphere is sold!
When it comes to jazz, it's even more interesting. I love music, I like most of the little jazz I listened to but I'm far from a connoisseur.
Thanks for taking us to such a club. I have seen only in movies.

Once you get a taste for live music, recorded just is no longer good enough!
Thanks for stopping in!

My pleasure! You definitely know better.

What a great night out! I haven't seen a live band in years.

That is not right! How is that even possible? I don't listen to recorded music very often - the live stuff is where it's at. I go out very little, but when I do it's either for great food (there's a stupendous pasta restaurant across the street, DPNB (for drop pasta not bombs)) or music. Thanks for dropping in!
