Some wonderful news for music fans everywhere: Legendary saxophonist John Coltrane will have a new album released at the end of this month.
According to the Guardian, this is a recording made 55 years ago and subsequently lost, and consequently forgotten, with the master tapes being destroyed back in the 70s (one has to wonder at the philistines who did that without checking what they'd got?) when Impulse had a grand clear out.
It seems that Coltrane gave his own reference tape to his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Naima, and it's remained in her family ever since.
From what I gather this was not necessarily designed as a concept, or project, album in the way that A Love Supreme etc was, but was recorded with the classic quartet of Coltrane, Elvin Jones on drums, Jimmy Garrison on bass and McCoy Tyner on piano, as more of an experiment. But whatever happens from now on, 11383 is going to be a unique number that will be seared into the aural capacity of music lovers down the ages.
So if you enjoy music and especially if you love Jazz and John Coltrane (but even if the latter are less important to you) you really need to think about adding this album into your collection.
