Sunday Sounds: Candy Man, Visions of Johanna and I'm On Fire

in music •  6 years ago

This Sunday's sounds (previously my music monday) is born out of grief for something that hasn't quite happened just yet. I'm still visiting my folks and finding the house loud with music. Doesn't matter Dad's got cancer, and is contemplating his a-dying, the vibe around there is always the same - I pull up in the driveway and hear tunes drifting out the windows. Sometimes he's asleep under a blanket on the couch, having drifted off to the tunes he's listening to. It makes me tear up to think one day I'll be visiting that home and it'll be silence - unless Mum starts being a tune selector, which I can't see happening. It was always, always, Dad.

I love this photo. This was last weekend - my son was around, and Dad gave him a box of vinyl. Here's us going through it. The three of us are the music lovers in the family - the totally obsessed ones. Jarrah's girl took this photo, aware of the poignancy of this moment!

Anyway, here's a few songs that will always remind me of Dad and bring him right in the room with me, even if he can't call me up and wax lyrical about a tune he's heard, insisting I drop EVERYTHING and listen to it RIGHT NOW.

The first one is a Dylan song. It contains one of my favourite lines ever - it's just pretty and lyrical: 'the ghosts of electricity howl in the bones of her face'. However, this is Chris Smithers doing it - it's just beautiful. Enjoy.

Chris Smithers also does a beautiful version of Missisipi John Hurt's 'CandyMan' which I also adore. I also love Taj Mahal's version, which reminds me of Dad too - he was (is) always a big Taj Mahal fan. Giant Step is one of the albums of my childhood. Well, one of hundreds, lol. Dad really did play ALOT of music!

Whilst Dad wasn't a fan of Springsteen (though he very much appreciated him), he is a fan of Harry Manx, and went and saw him live too, which would have been nice. This one is more my bias, as you know, I'm a secret lover of 'I'm on Fire'. The sound of the sitar is so beautiful.

The music in our house was from musicals: My Fair Lady, etc. that my mom would play every now and again. And at Christmas it was Perry Como, Andy Williams, etc. That was about it.

Ah.. and you carried on tradition of Christmas tunes! Xxx

Also the musicals, but I prefer the actual movies. :)) But yup, just adore that kind of Christmas music. :))

You happy at Christmas makes me smile!!!

That reply made me smile! And fortunately, I am in my favorite season, spring, and so the longing for calm and peace that hits me in early October is missing right now. :))

I always have music going as well. I don't mind silence but gosh, there's something about just lying there and listening to music. I love that photo of the three of you!!

Kyle and I still sing duets in the car when we go on road trips - makes my heart so happy!

When I was a kid I would put on the old records every Sunday and dance around the house. My dad was a fan of the Rolling Stones, The Shadows, The Electric Light Orchestra, The Hollies, and then I tortured him with Madonna and Cindy Lauper and the soundtrack from Flashdance when someone bought me the records.

Ha, my Dad still plays Apache on the guitar. We were Stones fans for sure!!! Oh I'd love to be a fly on the wall listening to you and Kyle do duets!!!

And there's nothing wrong with Cyndi Lauper!!
