The Power of FM Workshop 1

in music •  7 years ago

Hello Sound Designer and Musicians and Friends :-)
I´d like to introduce a series of Workshops about frequency/phase modulation and the sound of the 1980s.
In this series of workshops about frequency modulation and phase modulation (as it was/is used in Yamaha´s famous DX7 synthesizer) I explain the technique of FM/PM in an easy way, reducing the maths behind it to simple plus and minus operations, to enable you to "compose" a spectrum/sound one using a pencil and a piece of paper. To make your composition audible you may use any FM VST or FM synthesizer. In the workshop I use the freeware VST DEXED (which can also serve as a file-/bank manager not only for Yamaha´s DX7, but also for i.e. Korg´s Volca FM etc.). A third chapter in each of my workshops is called patch analysis, where I analyse famous DX7 patches used in well known songs/pieces from the 1980s. Analysing, understanding, using and modifying these patches is the name of the game.
Enjoy it!
Rolf
P.S.: It´s a pity, that there is this 1 GB limit on DTube. My tutorials and workshops are really in-depth and kind of longer (some even about 3 hours). I´ll have to stay at Youtube - unfortunately!

Hello, I'm a fan of FM synthesis, I used to own a Yamaha SY100 which was great. I now have a PSS-470, basically a toy but still fun!

If you have your tutorials on YouTube use something like Clip Converter or Keepvid, which will let you download at a lower resolution. That should then be uploadable to D.Tube...

Oh, thank you very much indeed for the tip. I´ll try it. Have a good time! Rolf
