Swiss Pop -- Guilty Pleasures -- CITY WALLS

One of the interesting experiences for me when I moved to Europe in the 80s was the realization that not all pop music was universal.

In large German companies there is a tradition of hiring students during the summer break. In the department I was working in there was a young student named Frankie, who like me was a music freak, and we lent each other some CDs during the six week he worked with us. His taste turned out to be very close to mine, and through him I discovered some Euro pop music I still enjoy.

Today my #guiltypleasure is the song "City Walls" by the Swiss singer/songwriter/guitarist Phil Carmen. There are actually several good songs on this album, although they are a little dated because of the synthesizer and digital instruments from 1987. The guitar work is very solid, and the keyboard/organ solos are excellent -- the reason, the great Brian Auger (jazz/rocker) is all over this album.

Luckily, there is a clip of Phil Carmen on Euro TV and you even get to see Brian Auger doing an excellent job of "syncing/playing" with the playback. Below that clip I've included the actual full studio version.

The keyboard solo is really great, and now you point it out, great acting too! I saw the video first and actually thought it was live because of this fake performance. I remember how chocked we all where first time it was revealed that the TV-performances had shifted to playback. That was a sad part of the eighties. In the seventies and sixties so much fantastic live footage was made by the European TV stations. That ended with the eighties focus on good looks :)

Yeah Brian Auger is a real heavy weight on organ, he did some of the best jazz/rock/soul crossover albums of the early 70s -- a more natural vintage sound compared to so many of the jazz fusion bands.

You're so right, Euro TV in the 60s, 70s was a treasure for capturing some of the musical greats playing live -- without it, we would have lost so much musical history. Things like very early Johnny Winter -- I think that was actually filmed in Denmark!

Maybe it is this tremendous footage. It's with Tommy Shannon and John Turner.

its very working experience done,,music bideo so amaxing
