If you're too lazy to read the entire post just read the last sentence.
Hey Guys! In this episode we'll look at the song structure, that dominates 2018. The structure isn't new at all, but the approach to it is completely different.
I will always link some music in my posts that you should listen to while reading. It helps a lot to get the right vibe, and you will remember much (MUCH!) better.
If you're a musician than you probably used this structure at least once. Yes, we talk about the most basic structure there is in songwriting... In case you don't know what I'm talking about, it's this one:
- Intro
- Chorus
- Verse 1
- Pre-Chorus
- Chorus
- Verse 2
- Pre-Chorus
- Chorus
- Bridge
- Pre-Chorus
- Chorus
- Chorus
- Intro = Orange
- Verse = Yellow
- Pre-Chorus = Blue
- Chorus = Red
- Bridge = Pink
So you may ask "what's the different approach you're talking about?" That is a legitimized question!
Every part of the song is equally long...that's mind-blowing, right?
There are a lot of amateurs that tend to write like this:
- long verses
- short pre-choruses
- long bridges
The choruses vary. Beginners tend to start with the verse and then write a chorus that hopefully somehow fits the verse. Nothing against that, but if you want to write a catchy song then that's not the way to do it(that topic is worth another post I guess).
So back on track. Why is this structure so great?
Easy to answer without any in-depth psychological explanation: you get more balance in your tracks, and your arrangement also gets better - automatically. Just try it! Why your arrangement automatically gets better is another story. However, you will definitely notice it.
Try to think like you're mixing a track. Frequencies balanced, Volume balanced, etc.. So why not balancing your structure - Now you got it, right?
You may have noticed - the intro is shorter than the other parts. That's because I don't really count them as "part of the song", honestly are there any intros out there you remember - probably not! The name says it all "introduction".
How you use this structure is entirely up to you. There are endless opportunities like filling the second verse with rap for example. Or combining the last pre-chorus with the bridge, to get a giant build-up. Just remember:
every part needs to have the same length!
A few reference tracks that use exactly this structure:
- Havana - Camila Cabello
- Attention - Charlie Puth
Here's my picture to verify, that I am a real person.
Synergy of individual parts. EVERY PART OF THE SONG HAS THE SAME LENGTH
Interesting stuff. I prefer to not follow a given structure when I write but it might be worth a try!
