The First Rock Song to Use the Synthesizer - Baba O'Riley

in music •  7 years ago

By 1971, musicians like Stevie Wonder and Pete Townshend (of The Who) were experimenting with the synthesizer. After the "light rock" sound of Tommy, Townshend was looking for a new direction. Step one was a new guitar and guitar style - playing and sound. Step two was with the synthesizer.

Pete Townshend took the idea of minimalist loops from musician Terry Riley. What happens when you mix a looping synthesizer with power chords?

Now for the bonus round. The second song Townshend wrote with synthesizer loops - Won't Get Fooled Again -

Live at Shepperton Studios, 1978, in front of a very lucky audience. This performance is considered one of the best ever live performances by any rock band. The proof is in the energy.

Years later, synthesizer music became its own genre. Rock music and the synthesizer have never parted ways - bands like Styx, Duran Duran, Chicago and others regular use/used the synthesizer.

And now you know where the guitar and synthesizer first met!

At the risk of disagreeing with your detective work, there's a couple problems with this post.

First, the synthesizer was in use long before this song came out. There are many examples of its use in popular music, going back to the mid-fifties. Even if you're strictly limiting yourself to Western pop music, this isn't in the running, time-wise. The Beatles' Abbey Road, which has Moog all over it (notably in Maxwell's Silver Hammer, where it is clearly audible) was recorded three years prior.

Secondly, and most importantly, that's not a synthesizer in Baba O'Riley. It is an organ, specifically a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1, being key-gated off its own internal drum machine. See the Wikipedia article about this song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_O'Riley or many other articles that have been written. It is a stellar example of songwriting and technology, but not a synth to be found, sorry to say.

Apologies for bringing this up, but future people will see this, and the information should be at least moderately correct.

Doctor House´s favorite song HAHA!

Love the band ... Never had a chance to see them live ..but I really wish I had a chance ... Especially wen I see the videos of their live performances even before I was born.. rockin hard n breaking instruments...btw Keith Moon's entry in this particular track is amazing n he was a talented Drummer...

I always thought this breakthrough was around 1969!

Stevie wonder, am actually listening to his music at the moment!
