Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.
‘Something’ in Music 331
Something Old
Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” written and first recorded by English singer-songwriter and musician David Bowie. It is the title track and the third single from his album of the same name which hit the record racks in 1980.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the tune titled “Memeza Revisit” by the indie act known as Mastermind Milano & Macya The Spaghetti. The track also features KiddyZA, Faya Ma'cassette and Exclusive KVY. Unfortunately, as this goes to press, not much else is actually known about the independent performing pair.
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Devil In Disguise” which was co-written by Bernie Baum, Bill Giant, and Florence Kaye. It was first recorded by American entertainer Elvis Presley in 1963. This avant garde audio adaptation is by the American band and art collective known only as The Residents. Their creative cover was first released on their 1989 album The King & Eye.
Something Blue
Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the new single “Bones” by the Chase Walker Band. In a recent email Walker briefly discussed the song. He said:
“‘Bones’ is the second in a series of brand new singles that I have planned for release in the coming weeks and months, all leading up to an album. This song has a groovy, spooky, retro vibe that I think you will absolutely love. It's the perfect tune to get you in the Halloween spirit!”
“Bones” features Walker (guitar and vocals); Matt Fyke (drums) and Bradon Davitt (bass). Check out the band’s official website for more information on this California-born modern blues rock and soul band.
