Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 336

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Pump It Up” written and recorded by English singer-songwriter and musician Elvis Costello and the Attractions. It was the second single off his 1978 platter titled This Year’s Model. It was inspired by Bob Dylan’s 1965 tune “Subterranean Homesick Blues.”

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new song “Mama’s Sleepin’” written and recorded by Los Angeles-based American singer-songwriter and musician Heather Anne Lomax. It’s off her upcoming new album The Doman Tracks. It features Lomax on guitar and vocals, late producer Michael Doman on guitar and backing vocals, Jason Hiller on bass, Jeff Sebens on guitar, and Joel Alpers on drums and percussion.

If you’re in Southern California and would like to see Lomax play live, you’re in luck! Lomax will soon be on her Doman Tracks Record Release Tour. The tour opens on November 11, 2023, at the Lost Church in San Francisco, California. The show will also include a performance by Los Angeles, California-based Americana artist, Pi Jacobs. For tickets and additional information visit her official website.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Come As You Are” recorded by the American rock band Nirvana. The song was written by the group’s frontman, Kurt Cobain, and was featured on their 1992 album Nevermind. This circa 2013 cover is by the Los Angeles-based cinematic soul songstress Claire London and New York City-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Jason Cummings.

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Blue Skies” written and recorded by the Los Angeles, California-based American indie-pop singer-songwriter and musician Kim DiVine. It originally appeared on her 2009 album titled Square One. This is a live version of the song from 2008. It was recorded on October 4th at Lestat’s in San Diego, California.
