Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

Special Thanksgiving Edition!

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the nigh-classic cut "The Thanksgiving Song" (a.k.a. "Happy Thanksgiving") performed by actor, comedian and songwriter Adam Sandler. Sandler co-wrote the song with TV writer Ian Maxtone-Graham and actor, comedian, and writer Robert Smigel It’s from Sandler’s debut disc They're All Gonna Laugh At You! which dropped in 1993.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new song “I Could Use A Silent Night” recorded by Texas-based Americana artist Helene Cronin and co-written with Nicole Lewis. It’s off Cronin’s new and original Christmas disc, Beautiful December. In a message on social media, Cronin commented on the cut.

She said it is “a song for all who are holiday weary, tired of the commercial chaos that comes around every year at Christmas. It can be a beautiful season though, perfect for reflecting on the gifts we've been given, the ones that matter most. May your Christmas be filled with magic, beauty and angel choirs.”

The new release also includes Bobby Terry on guitar, Byron House on bass, Chris Powell on drums, Melodie Chase on cello, Charlie Lowell on keys and bells, Mitch Dane on percussion, and additional guitar, bells, and keys, Caitlin Anselmo and Matt Singleton on background vocals, and the “Angel Choir” featuring Andrew Osenga, Steevie Steves, Andrew Marshall, Tia Hiatt, Ellison Gossett, and Matt Singleton.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 2008 track “Whatever You Like” by American rapper T.I. "Eat Whatever I Like" is a Thanksgiving Parody that adapts the T.I. track. It was recorded by American social media personality, rapper, comedian, and self-proclaimed “loudmouth” Hardstop Lucas in 2016.

Lucas briefly spoke of the parody piece on social media. He said: “I know this is different from my average videos, but I had to do it for the holidays. I hope you all enjoy and have a Happy Thanksgiving!”

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Thanksgiving Blues” by Sylvester Cotton. The song focuses on the struggles of being alone on Thanksgiving. It’s off the Sylvester Coton and Andrew Dunham album Blues Sensation: Detroit Down Home Recordings 1948-49 released on Ace Records in 2013.
