Something in music: the origin
One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…
‘Something’ in Music 369
Something Old
Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Cherry Bomb” written and recorded by American rock singer-songwriter John Mellencamp. It was the second single off his ninth album, The Lonesome Jubilee which hit the record racks in 1987. It’s a nostalgic look back at Mellencamp's teen years.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the new single “Move Ya” by the California-based American blues rock act known as The Chase Walker Band. Walker, who wrote the song, briefly discussed the track in a recent email. He said: “The newest single, ‘Move Ya’... will move you! …not in a sugary love song kind of way but in a rock your a$$ off kind of way. I wrote this song thinking about some of my favorite classic rock anthems from bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and ZZTop.”
He concluded: “It’s one of those songs that just makes you want to rock out, drive fast and shake whatcha got! If you're like me, a good rockin’ song can always snap me out of my funk and make my day better. This is one of those songs for sure and I just know you are going to love it.” It features Walker on lead guitar and vocals, Matt Fyke on drums, and Randon Davitt on bass.
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song "Wish I Knew You" written and recorded by the US rock band The Revivalists for their 2016 album Men Amongst Mountains. This dedicated cover is by San Francisco, California-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Martha Groves Perry and musician Rich Armstrong. It was recorded live at the Art Boutiki Music Hall in San Jose CA on October 21, 2020, as part of a pandemic livestream performance.
If you’d like to see Perry perform live and are in the Mill Valley, California area, you’re in luck. She and Epic Nelson will be opening for Yellowwood Junction on Thursday, February 1st at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley at 8:00 p.m. Tickets to this all-ages show are $26.00 in advance or $32.00 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. For further details, visit Perry’s official website.
Something Blue
Last but not least, our “something blue” this time is the song “Baby Blue” written and recorded by the Nashville, Tennessee-based singer, songwriter, and musician Rod Picott. It’s off his 2002 disc titled Stray Dogs. (Check out a review of his upcoming new album, Starlight Tour, right here.)
