Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

‘Something’ in Music 373

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Family Affair” first recorded by the American band Sly & The Family Stone. Written by the band's singer and keyboardist Sly Stone, it was released as a single back in 1971. It was their third and last number-one single.

Something New

Our “something new” for this edition is the new song and music video “Be With Me” by indie musician PeachLeviticus. It is off his digital album titled The Garden. He discussed his background and musical training in a post on social media.

He said: “Combined with a guitar, I [have] played saxophone since 5th grade. I was accepted into college for music engineering…[but] instead made an album, started a video charity business, [and have been] trying to get my song on public radio…My guitar playing isn't too bad. I'm a saxophone player [and an] improv soloist.”

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song "Mercy Mercy Mercy" written by Joe Zawinul in 1966 for Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. This cover was performed live by the Boston, Massachusetts-based blues band Bees Deluxe at Ryles in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It includes Allyn Dorr on bass, Carol Band on keyboards, and Sebastian Kossak on drums.

If you’d like to see them live, you’re in luck. Bees Deluxe is on tour now. Check out these upcoming dates:

Wednesday, March 6
The Lizzie Rose Music Room
Tuckerton, NJ

Friday, March 8
Jamey's House of Music
Landsdowne, PA

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” this time is the song “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by the Italian eurodance trio Eiffel 65. It includes Gianfranco Randone, Maurizio Lobina, and Gabriele Ponte. It was initially released in 1998 and is included on the act’s debut disc, Europop, which dropped the following year. The song topped the charts in no less than 18 countries. It peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2000 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2001.
