Four Year Strong - Rise or Die Trying

Label: Decaydance

Genre: Pop Punk / Melodic Hardcore

Rise or Die Trying is the second full-length studio album from Pop Punk rockers Four Year Strong. Along with Say Anything, these were the guys who introduced me to the high tempo beats and punky pop melodies that came to define my late teens and early twenties. Rise or Die Trying was released in September 2007, following on from their successful debut album It's Our Time. In fact, the name of the album comes from a line in the track Go Long Dad from the first album.

To me, this album is the band's most iconic work, even beating their most commercially successful album Enemy of the World. Although this record may lack the polish and shine of the third, there's a raw edge to it that I feel like the band may have lost somewhere along the way. I can honestly say that each and every one of the tracks from this album are pop punk classics, with Abandon Ship or Abandon All Hope, Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die and Beatdown in the Key of Happy being three of the most stand out songs.

This albums also feeds my addiction to pop culture references too, with six of the songs being direct quotes from popular shows and movies. Take "Wrecked 'Em? Damn Near Killed 'Em", which is a quote from black comedy movie Black Sheep (and also Men in Black II). Quoting pop culture is a common feature of Four Year Strong songs, with one of my favourites of all of their song titles being "What the Hell Is a Gigawatt?".

This isn't the first Four Year Strong album I've covered here, but it is easily my favourite. Are you a FYS fan? Here's a question for the fans of Pop Punk; what is that "pop punk" accent?? Anyway, let me know your thoughts about this record down in the comments section, and as always make sure to follow me for the latest Technology, Internet and Pop Culture updates. Until next time, take it easy!
