Playing music doesn’t heal, but it gives a temporary release..

I was discussing the topic of music and heartache with a bunch of musicians that I’ve known over the years. Each one seemed to have a different relationship with music & whether they use it as a tool to mend heartache or “get things out” or not.

I always used to see music as something that was therapeutic and thought it filled a void on a road of emotional healing. Some of the most pained musicians sing and play from their hearts and souls, & help listeners through tough times, but I don’t think that it actually helps the musician in a long term way.

Writing and expressing how you feel is something, of which in my opinion, musicians do when they are feeling hurt and lost. They are trying to fill an emptiness inside of them and find some answers while getting out emotions.

I don’t necessarily think that it “heals” us, but rather is a tool for a temporary release of pain & being lost. The actual journey of healing and moving past the pain comes in regarding other areas in life (for myself; spiritual)

Some of the best musicians are no longer alive, because they were looking to be healed, heard, and get it all out of their system, using a tool that only goes as far as a temporary release.

I’ve used music in this way years ago, & ended up having a horrible relationship with it because of this.

I’ve finally mended my personal relationship with music, but till occasionally use it as a “tool” on days when I need a slight release.

Here is a clip of my acoustic cover of “Drive” by Incubus, because today was rough.
