Ah-yee Tsoe's Boiled Beans
အရီးစိုး ပဲျပဳတ္

I was born in a small village in Myittha township of Kyaukse district in Mandalay Division, Upper Myanmar. Our village lies on the right of the old Rangoon-Mandalay trunk road, built by the British. Beside our village there is a cart track which comes from Tha-bye-daung village. It means the trunk road bisecting our village into two villages with the same name but belonging to different village tracts. Our half became Ywatha-Anauk-ywa and the other parts, Ywatha-Ashe-ywa meaning, Ywatha East and Ywatha West.

My recollections go back a long way - long before the Second World War (WWII). Ah-yee-Tsoe was the oldest person alive. She sold boiled beans. She never hawked her delicacy. It was special. People had to wait along her beat from very early morning, may be 5 a.m, 5:30, depending on the season - but certainly before sunrise, because she had to be in front of Kume Police Station before the first rays of the sun lit the sky blue. Policemen's wives wait silently by the road for her. All 26 of them were her regular customers. After serving them, she moves on into the village of In-byaa and on to Kume proper along her beat. By the time she reaches a ration store, it was about sun-toddy-palm-top as our locals used to say.
