HAAAI, Steemians! Remember, precisely 29 days ago, when I launched my new series called "My Favourite Things"? Of course you don't, I only did the one post. That's not much of a series, is it?!

I got carried away with end of year at my shop, Christmas and New Years came and went, and today, a light bulb 🌟 went off, and I realised that I hadn't completed my series. I love vintage and antiques, and I love to educate others on the history and design elements that go with antiques.

My antique that I am sharing with you today is a light that my team designed and custom built in our workshop. You can see my colleague, Rozani, hanging the chandelier when it was first completed. It is inspired by a very classic style of chandelier, the neoclassical. There are many variations on these lights, but a few distinctive features are the following:

  • the slender neck
  • the crystal basket at the bottom
  • the use of elaborate metal castings for a decorative element

We used antique brass castings to form the pretty decorative bands at the top and centre of the lights. These castings come in long, straight lengths, and our brilliant coppersmith bends them into the round shape with his flame. He also made the arms from hollow brass round bar. Amazing work, right?

The crystal used is Asfour crystal, which is the same level as Swarovski crystal. It took Rozani about two weeks to string all the crystal onto this frame, after our coppersmith had made it. It took the coppersmith about a week to make the frame of the light, and a few other team members had to electrify the light, which also took time. So this light was probably a month in it's making

It's quite a large light, 1400mm (about 4ft) h x 600mm (about 2ft) in diameter, and would do very well in a double volume space, like an entrance hall or dining hall

So, Steemians, that was #myfavouritethings post. Hope you learnt something, and loved the pics.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts

two weeks to string all the crystals?? i can’t imagine the precision of doing that. wow

Hey! It's my minnow friend! How are you enjoying Steemit?

It is extremely painstaking work, and it requires intense concentration as each string has different sized crystals, in different quantities. Rozani is a quiet guy, he loves to sit and listen to music while he works.

Rozani is a patience fellow! major props to him.

Yes, there is so much to read. It is a huge refreshment after the drivel on Facebook. Blog when you can! It is important to be active, as well as to get interaction going, by commenting and reading other's posts.

This is so cool and also interesting. I had no idea how these are built. Such hard and difficult work. And it's so beautiful I can see why it's one of your favourite things.

in my parents' house, we have 2 of this lights, a bit smaller and younger i think. and every month, we had to take little chains with crystals of to clean it in alcohol. We did smoke, and the crystal suffers from it. Stone my stone got cleaned with cloth and alcohol and then hanged back. Ohw my god I hated them lights!!! :-o Nice to look at, but cleaning ...

But if you just take a spray bottle with the alcohol and completely wet the stones (crystals) and place newspaper underneath, then the dirt will drip onto the newspaper and you don’t have to do all that work!

the crystals are on a chain from metal, like copper or brass, when you do nt dry it thoroughly, the chain will have corrosion very quick. what makes that the crystal can fall of easily. When you would live in Belgium I would know 2 for sale. :-)

hehe! If it corrodes it means it is not brass or copper or even silver, it must be steel. And yes, that is what happens :)

so we took off the pearls and dried it all separately

I love chandelier. This is amazing and so well done you'd hardly know it wasn't antique.
I think some of my favourite are from 18th century France.
