Striped Bass (Marone saxatilis) Mount!

Born into freshwater estuaries and rivers along the east coast. Moving out to sea shortly after, waiting for the winter to come for their southbound migration. Then to move north again once the water begins to warm up in the following spring. Long Island, one of their extended stops on the migration allows a nice window of opportunity for anglers twice a year, when they migrate up and when they migrate down.

A lot of people like myself like to try their luck for a keeper (28") and some are in it for the prolific fight and practice catch and release. Another thing People will do is get their catch mounted. This is usually done by making a cast of the fish and the mold that comes out is meticulously painted and eyes are added.

The mount I have was not a catch of my own, it was given to me by a friend. I can imagine the fun he had reeling in this 30" striped bass. Even though this was not my catch I still see the story of the chase for Marone saxatilis.

I hung this up in my living room to marvel at it on a regular basis. I only have one problem with this imagination striking mount.

The paint is chipping off! Unfortunately, I have no clue what those artists use to paint mounts. Blending the right colors is another thing. But, If I am going to restore it I want to do it correctly.

Once running the ocean now hanging on the wall for me and visitors to imagine the magnificent life of this beautiful creature

Great post! Thanks for mentioning us! :)

Gotta love those stripers. There's just something about them that's special. May the big 50 pounder be in your future very soon...

Thank you! I sure hope so.

That was a nice gift from your friend, especially knowing how much you love and respect these fish. I hope you are able to get it restored so that it can be fully appreciated for many more years to come. No reason it can't be handed down to the next generation of striped bass fishermen. Great post! Very informative. Each time I read one of these posts I want more and more to catch one! :)

Also, I really like your idea of including the bit about the @myhuntingfishing blog and the #myhuntingfishing tag at the bottom of your posts. Thank you! Keep up the good work!

Thank you!!! I do intend to pass it on in the future, but, as odd as it may sound even if I have kids they would not be at default to get it. All I do know is that who I give it to next will be someone who enjoys fishing as much as myself. I did forget to mention in the post this friend of mine is an older neighbor who doesn't fish much at all anymore. knowing he likes fish I gave him some boneless steaks from a striper I had caught. The very next week he handed me the mount and said "My wife told me I have to get rid of this. . . but seriously, you seem like you would appreciate this little token of my past". He was right, and now hes always first in line whenever I'm giving away meat.

Can someone please tell me, if the freshwater hybrid striped bass = this bass?

  • I remember reading about catching them down on Beaver Lake in Arkansas.
    • The MO Conservation Dept. has stocked Lake Paho (I drive by this lake twice a day between home and work...) with them.
      • I hear of a few catching them.
        Usually 5-10 pounders...
  • or is this fish one half of the hybrid I'm thinking of...???

Yes they are, they are a mix of Marone saxitilis (this one, striped bass) and Marone chrysops (white bass) I believe they call them whiterock bass. I don't think M. saxitilis can live and breed in only freshwater, I'm pretty sure thats why they needed to hybridize them. While I don't know how big the hybrid can get, I do know that a pure M. saxitilis in the wild can reach 50lbs/50inches.
