what is ' Barbados Moving coffin'?
In the early nineteenth century(1812~1820), In the Caribbean island of Barbados, there was an incident in which a coffins inside a church crypt was moved.
History of crypt (12 feet deep, 6 feet wide)
The church Near the southern coast of Barbados near Oistin's Bay is situated at the western end of the cemetery.
- In 1724 - Built by James Elliot .
- In 1792 - James' wife Elizabeth was enshrined. (Sold to the Walrond family in the middle )
- In 1807 - Mrs. Thomas Ordi Goddard was enshrined.
- In 1808 - Thomas Chase bought for use as a family cemetery.
- In February 2, 1808 - Thomas's two-year-old daughter, Mary Ann Maria, was enshrined.
- In 1812 - Thomas's Another daughter Dockers was enshrined.(Death itself is a mystery, There was rumor that he had starved to death after being abused by his father.)
- In August 9, 1812 - After another daughter died, Thomas committed suicide.
- In September 25, 1816 - Thomas's relative Charles Bruce Ames was enshrined.(11-year-old, died while swimming)
- In November 17, 1816 - Samuel Brewster was enshrined.(There was rumor that he was murdered by the riot of slaves.)
- In July 17 , 1819 - Mrs. Tomasina Clark was enshrined.
- First Incident(In 1807)
- James' wife Elizabeth was first enshrined in 1792.
- And when the crypt was opened to lay Thomas Goddard in 1807, the Elizabeth's coffin disappeared.(Elizabeth vampire rumor spread)
- Second Incident(In August 1812)
- When the door of the crypt was opened to lay the Thomas's coffin, His two daughters' coffins were standing on the wall.(Mary Ann Maria's coffin was upside down.)
- They thought that someone had turned it over and enshrined Thomas's coffin.(Because of the lack of space, put the dochers coffin overlaid on Thomas' s coffin)
- After placing the coffin, the locals heard a strange sound inside the crypt.
- Third Incident(In September 1816)
- When they enshrined Charles Bruce, the coffins in the crypt were scattered.
- Mrs. Goddard's coffin was broken, and it was standing on the wall.(The body was on the floor, and Her remains were put into a new coffin and transferred to another place.)
- Rumors of incident in Barbados' crypts begin to spread.
- Fourth Incident(In July 1819)
- As the rumors spread, Stapleton Cotton(The then governor general) became interested.
and Stapleton Cotton decided to take part in the next funeral. - When they enshrined Mrs. Tomasina Clark, the coffins in the crypt were scattered.
- Stapleton Cotton sprinkled sand on the floor to arrest the perpetrator, and sealed the entrance with a stone (Before that, Stapleton Cotton put all the coffins in place.)
- Fifth Incident(In April 1920)
- In April 18 1820 Stapleton Cotton and Governor's office workers tried to break the seal to open the door to the inside of the crypt, but the door did not open.(Eventually they used the tool to break the door.)
- The inside of the crypt was astounding.
- Thomas' s coffin was standing and blocking the door.(Because of this, the door did not open.)
- All the coffins were scattered around,(Some of the coffins stood upside down.) and Most of the coffins were broken.
- Crucially, there is no trace left on the bottom sand...
Rumors of cursed crypts spread throughout Barbados after the incident.
Eventually, all the coffins of the crypts were transferred to England, and there were no incidents thereafter.
