On the Eleventh of August, the year of Season 6 of Game of Thrones, 2016, I hereby declare how I will vote:
- I will upvote posts and/or people I like.
- I will downvote the posts I find to be:
- Spam
- Plagurization
- Consistent hashtag spam
- Stalking
- Harassing
- Hateful, rage-fueled non-sense
- A net negative to our investment, Steemit
- I will not downvote posts and/or people that I disagree with
- I may even upvote posts I disagree with, because I respect the work put into it.
- I may even upvote content that lacked a lot of work, simply because I respect the creator and know their potential.
- I will likely ignore and mute users that I see abusing their down votes.
- I will not downvote their posts as retaliation.
- I will not judge people on a small sample, either. This is a new platform, and we are all working hard to see it succeed.
- If someone consistently downvotes a content creator because they dislike them or disagree with them, then I feel they aren't doing what's best for this site, and I don't want any part of that.
I want to see a diverse array of people use this site and not feel compelled to act a certain way in order to get upvotes or avoid downvotes.
I want to see civil discussion and open-mindedness, to go along with discovery and growth for each of us individually.
I feel that the way in which I will vote here on Steemit, will be a value-add approach for all of us.
I also sign this declaration. (although I prefer to use the term 'flag' instead of 'downvote'.

I agree. I prefer flag as well. I used downvote in the post, and won't change it because I don't want people to think I waffled on anything after editing it, but I'm with you going forward.

I only upvoted because I disagree with everything you said, but I respect the effort you put into it.
Nah, just kidding - well said. Hopefully this rational, levelheaded voting will catch on!

That's just it, the mute button works wonders.

I only upvote content I personally like. Not the content I think the mass (and whales) will like.

I also will not upvote content just because the masses and whales will like it. However, I will support posts and authors who deserve a pat on the back for working hard and contributing valuable content to the site.

Well spoken Derek! I have to say, this is the EXACT manner in which I have been conducting myself on here since day one. If I see posts I don't particularly take interest in, among other valid reasons, I simply choose not to upvote them or follow the authors behind them. In a place like this that only strives to encourage intellectual and civil discussion, there is no room for spiteful flaggers who only seek to destroy what the Steemit community is trying to build. This should be a place of civility, open-mindedness and a strong sense of community rather than be like all the other platforms that allow trolls to do their bidding upon honest, intelligent and accepting people. There should be no place for that on here. Period. The ability to flag/report/downvote may be useful to a degree, but it is becoming all too clear that there are many who choose to abuse it simply because they have no sense of purpose to prey upon honest people then retreat back into the proverbial shadows like cowards. I hope Steemit can find a way to put a stop to this travesty and abuse of such a wonderful social platform.

Sorry, vdoh, I see that you have been sending this message to other people as well. This is not the way to go about your Steemit experience. I won't down vote this, this time, but please try to engage people and their content. If we like what you added, we'll check your posts out and maybe follow you and upvote your content. Spam-like behavior is exactly what we're trying to avoid here, and I feel this won't do you any good in the long run. Your reputation is more valuable than the money earned in posts.
