Love is in the air: Pine Pollen is Ready For Harvest

in naturalmedicine •  6 years ago

Yellow dust is scattered along the driveway, coating trees, vehicles, and my jacket. This is a sure sign that a coniferous sort of love is in the air.

Pine trees release millions of pollen grains each spring to increase the odds of successful pollination. This is quite a potent nutritionally dense resource for us. The properties are so complex that I am still working on understanding all of it but one of the biggest reasons people use it is because it is an adaptogen. Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to stress by boosting our natural resilience while promoting balance inside the body. It is also strongly anti-inflammatory which I could use right now.

We are going to be harvesting it and processing it, from pine trees on our land. The trees are loaded with cones and our harvest does no harm to the trees. This process is quite a bit of work but quite fun and well worth the effort. One Canadian source charges $48 for 30 grams. Having harvested it before I understand the price, it is a bit labour intensive and the window to harvest is usually only a few weeks at most.

I'll share more of the process, the health and nutritional benefits and all the details as I can. Pine pollen and pine trees are truly fascinating and so often taken for granted. I'll be photographing the steps over the next few days while my husband does all of the work. Such a terrible time for me to be flaking out with my back but hey, maybe the pine pollen will help! :)

Pine pollen will help for sure ❤ Another sweet offering by Mother nature. I hope i catch all of your blogs on this collecting and harvesting and preparing pine pollen for use. Thank-you so much for reminding me to get back going on the adaptejans. I have astragalus and maybe some ginseng kicking around. Doh! That reminds me i forgot to take supplements today!! Oh life, Haha! Praises for putting your healing first!! Heal up all well and good. So you can giver and giver!!!! Always love enjoying your blogs. 🌻🍉❤

I haven't really focused on adaptogens much so this is a really good free source for me to dabble with. I am thinking of making tinctures and then using the powder for culinary so we've got a good stock of it in winter. It's so fascinating and with such an abundance around us, I really do feel blessed. Lol ... I am getting grumpy about having to sit back out of the action. :)

Here I've been just collecting the baby trees!! I'm surrounded by huge David Douglas' at my current home but moving soon, I have so many tiny little baby trees in taking it's ridiculous!!

I hope they transplant well for you. They really are such adorable things when they are tiny.

What kind of pine trees do you have?
It looks like a longer needle type then the Jack-pines we have. Is it the red pine?
Looking forward to seeing your process for harvesting the pollen.
Thanks for sharing and beautiful photos!

We've got other pines as well but they've all released their pollen. This is the red pine and wow! The cones are insane.

Will be following this with interest....

I am so excited to follow your post on pine pollen! Can you harvest pine pollen from any type of pine trees or only specific variety?
