On Monday my new glasses arrived in the mail. I've been wearing glasses for myopia (short sightedness) since I was a child, so this normally wouldn't be anything exceptional, but this pair of glasses could mark a new chapter in my life.
Over the years that I've worn glasses my prescription has increased, rapidly at first, but slower as I've gotten older. Then a few years ago my optician told me that my prescription had actually gone back down a little, which meant that my eyesight had settled. This was great news. A couple of years later when my glasses were breaking, I went back to get new ones and it was pretty much a case of just getting replacements. Then at my last check up, two years ago, they increased my prescription again.
I questioned it and when I put my new glasses on I struggled to focus and the response was that I'd adjust. Opticians won't change your prescription without a fight and won't let you buy lenses you weren't prescribed, so I just accepted that I'd have to adjust. However, after the initial adjustment I've been having issues I never had before. I've had an increase in headaches and when I get tired my focus goes off. So when my daughter discovered you could by glasses online without a prescription and at a better price than the opticians, I started to think about ordering a new pair online and dialing back the prescription a step. I'd been reading bits now and again on improving vision via exercises and reducing your prescription and was wondering about slowly working my prescription back over time.
My current glasses were pretty scratched, so this seemed like the opportune time to try, then I found my second pair of glasses in the drawer from the two for one offer that Specsavers always do and couldn't justify paying out for another pair and wasting these.
Another year on and I was reading a post by @samstonehill where he asked people to join him in correcting your vision naturally. It was like fate was prodding me in that direction, so I took a deep breath and raised my hand.
I managed to obtain my last prescription and it was -4.50. I have astigmatism, so there are some other numbers there too, but it was only the -4.50 I needed to change. Prescriptions go in increments of .25, so I ordered -4.25 lenses. With a 30% off voucher, sourced online, it came to about 47 AUD. Not a bad price, considering what I normally pay.
There is a range of glasses, in prices and sizes to fit the face. You can take a photo and try them on to give an idea of which size fits and what they look like. I picked a pair which came in medium, but on arrival found them a little on the large side, but nothing which couldn't be fixed with some adjustment on the arm ends. I should probably go for a small or extra small next time.
There was a slight adjustment period wearing them for the first day and again on day three, when I struggled to focus on mid distance first thing in the morning. No problems at all since then.
I'm currently reading through on other things I need to be doing to assist my eyes in their improvement and I may need a second, much weaker pair of glasses for close up work. I'll keep you updated.

Nice one! I've just booked an eye test myself. My plan was to get the results and buy a pair of reading glasses online. I've never needed glasses before but have been noticing fuzzy vision when reading close up (not just due to being stoned :). I read @samstonehill's post with interest and am also now following his very interesting looking blog, thanks for the link!
As with many things, it seems that complexity and complications lie on the side of the 'industry' that purports to 'help'; whereas real and lasting solutions are to be found in the DIY approach of individual self-empowerment and action!

Shaun has been buying reading glasses from the local supermarket for a really good price. I think chemists might do them too. That is for far sightedness, so the prices for correcting that wool be a bit different. I'll have to look it up. He's just been trying some pinhole specs and a few people have extolled their virtues for improving far sightedness.

Please do. I read Sam's post and it seems like a fascinating concept. Henry's getting sick of his contacts. Hard to impress the long term benefits on such a young mind.

I'm doing a bit of reading on it and want to start on Sam's other posts. I've heard of kids who just refused to wear their glasses and eventually didn't need them and what I'm reading is starting to make sense of that. This is a good read to explain how the muscle can get stuck with too much close up work.
I feel like Henry could be young enough to recover fairly quickly.

47 bucks is a bargain. Glad you are being proactive about this.. @samstonehill !!!!
Y'know Jamie went and got eyes tested and was told to get reading glasses. He went for cheapest frames.. 40 bucks.. and asked for a case. Thatll be an extra 30 bucks. Wtf? Went to local op shop. 50 cents. Thanks optomestrist... not!!!

You can't win, can you? I get a case with every single purchase and never use them (mind you that's when I'm sending over $100 for them). You can take glasses back to bee recycled, but they won't take back the untouched cases which would save them huge wastage. Shaun has been getting reading glasses from our local IGA Foodland for about $10, I think. Will have to look into whether far sightedness can be corrected naturally.

We have many global friends who go up to the Tachilek market (Northern Thai border crossing into Burma) simply to buy the glasses frames. $6 if you DON'T bargain. LOL My friend, Monica, usually gets 7 funky new frames each annual visit. Then down to Chiang Mai where the local glasses store will put your prescription lenses in for $20-$30 - includes blue light blocking. She is the Imelda of glasses... LOL.

It's so hard to buy lenses to go in frames here. There are some places online which do it, but you then have to send them and they need to come back, making it cheaper to just buy all in.

And sadly Mother Earth is futther depleted by that "cheaper to just buy a whole new one" mindset. 😭 Im glad to be out of that disposable culture.

That particular culture is proving to be a really hard one to shake, here. I rather envy that you have escaped it. There are a few companies here and there moving towards replaceable parts and longer lasting, but few have reached Australia's shores. ☹

Excellent to read this! Fate certainly is prodding you ;)
Thank you for being the ONE PERSON who has actually taken action and posted about it. Even if it is just the two of us, we are going to get this done!
My new glasses arrived just yesterday! £5.99 on Amazon would you believe. Next day delivery ;)
The optician and my own calculations put me at -2.25, so I am wearing -2 now.
I also had a hair cut yesterday... like a new chapter has begun!
Now to practice Active Focus. Were you able to digest any of that page I sent you?

That's an even better bargain than mine! I can only find prescription glasses frames on our Amazon. I don't see how to get lenses in them. At nearly $50 pop and reducing from -4.50, this could get expensive. Once I get to -3.00 Clearly does a cheaper option, however.
I did read through the things on AF. Started practicing before the glasses arrived. I've been borrowing my daughter's -3.25 for close up work and passing the information on to her to work on her own myopia.
I tried the "focus" test and that put me at -3.75, which was interesting I'm not sure how well I would have gone dialing it back that far that quickly. Having said that, I only tried it today and may already have made some improvements, so I might try for that diopter next.

Here is the link on amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XCW86Q6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Looking at it now it seems like they only go up to -2.50 and they only sell halves and round numbers. So I may just go for -1.50 next. Honestly, -2 feels too strong and practicing active focus with glasses on is almost impossible because everything is just so sharp right up to the horizon.
Practicing AF on my computer is simple. Every hour or so I just pull my head back till it is blurry and I blink a few times forcing that clarity back.
Am super excited to see how fast I can get back to 20:20
I may even order the -1.5 right away!
At that price, why not?
Good idea using your daughters -3.25 for close up work. In Jake's FB group I can see a number of people have ordered two sets, for distance & close-up. Makes sense.
The FB group is very helpful btw and quite entertaining too. Jake is a total nutter, but good at interacting with people & answering questions.

I've got them up on the Australian Amazon, thank you. Some of them actually go up to -6.00, but in halves, as you said. I think -3.50 might be too big a jump as my daughter's -3.25 ones aren't really good enough. Decisions... maybe -4.00 first is the better way to go.
I've not managed to achieve AF one demand. I keep trying and I'm putting things just outside of clear vision range while reading to try and work my eyes.
I've just joined the facebook group. Mostly been searching questions to see what others have said.

NICE!! Yes, the whole "you can only have on prescription" thing is something I had forgotten about. It really prevents people from the smart strategy you are using. Here in Thailand the glasses are CHEAP - no prescription. I'm also needing new reading glasses soon as mine are a bit scratched, but I'm really wanting to get blue light blocking ones next time, since I use them for online work a lot.

Could be a while, yet, as I try to find the time to research and absorb what I'm finding out at the moment. I'm coming across mentions on sight improvements with the detox of heavy metals, so diet and health certainly seem to play a part. I'm also realising that my myopia is at a relatively low level, in comparison to many, which is telling me that had I refused to wear glasses from the start I very likely could have avoided this deterioration entirely.
Yes, lots to post about as I learn.

WE take it for granted that a woman's eyesight deteriorates during pregnancy and menopause as her hormones change. It's really telling us (I think!) that her dietary needs have changed. Maybe I will research it if I have nothing to do..... LOL...
