Starting to clear up the pond.

With the help of my daughter today we fixed a broken fence post and then turned our attention to the pond. Using an old fishing net we've got rid of alot of the floating green weed from the surface and about 4 buckets of dead leaves rotting under the water.

There's still alot of dead leaves to get out of the pond but if we can keep getting a few buckets a day out we should see a difference in a week or so.

The ponds water level is low and the water stagnent so we've ran a hosepipe up the garden and just to add a bit of fun used it to fill the top pool up and run the waterfall. As you can see the top pool is also overgrown and will need a clean out at some point before we get a new pump for the waterfall.

OK it's more of a trickle than a waterfall but leaving it on overnight should flush out some of the stagnent water and freshen up the pond water for the tadpoles and insect life in there.
Over the last couple of years the pond has really just been left to itself and as a result it's going to need a major clean up to make it once again a feature of the garden rather than a stinky puddle of water.

Landscape ponds are so refreshing and pleasing. I dug one in our yard, but that's about as far as I've gotten. I haven't placed a liner in it or a pump. My wife wants me to fill it in, claiming it is a danger to our little boys. I did make it more shallow - from seven feet to about five feet deep.

I put the pond at the top of the garden behind a fence and gate so when our kids were little they couldn't get to it

Beautiful, quite a landscaping project and fun with the family. Algae eater fish, gold fish, or koi?

We stopped trying to keep fish in the pond as we had a heron keep stealing them despite putting wires around the pond and buying one of those plastic decoy herons. Just have frogs and insects in it now.

I fear cleaning out stagnant ponds like that. Between the bugs, the smell, potential snakes and other critters... Eeek. I couldn't do it. LOL BUT I love water features!

We don't tend to get snakes here but the smell is rank and there's plenty of bugs
