Good evening nature fans. Antelope Canyon in Arizona is the most incredible feature of it's kind that I have ever seen. I've been to a few other slot canyons and narrow gorges in Nevada, Pennsylvania, California, Portugal, and Iceland, but none of these come close to the majesty of the Antelope. It stretches a quarter mile long and over 100 feet tall, yet some areas are only three or four feet wide. It's smooth, wavy sandstone walls are absolutely mesmerizing. It's also the location of the most expensive photograph ever taken: Peter Lik's "Phantom", which a print sold for $6.5M at auction. This DNF isn't about the canyon itself though. I already did a blog about this last year, which could be found here: Daily Nature Fix: Antelope Canyon - Home of the $6.5Million Photograph.
That being said, what today's Daily Nature Fix IS about, is a serious of photographs from inside the canyon on our walk through. A bunch of photographs that I had previously forgotten, to be honest. You see, photographs taken from the canyon floor looking upward are kind of hard to decipher. It's almost hard to know what you're looking at, with no frame of reference. Hell, even KNOWING it's the inside of Antelope Canyon, it's pretty hard to know what you're really looking at. It's just a serious of shapes and shades, so I just put them all into digital storage. I sort of rediscovered them yesterday though, and I realized that they're really, really cool when you look at them just from an artistic point of view. They make for an incredible series of abstract images, compliments of Mother Nature. ALL of these photos are 100% unedited and unaltered. Lets begin.
^^^The layers of brightness make for some cool effects in these shots. I like how the brightest area in this one makes almost a spearhead shape pointing up.
^^^I like all of the dark areas in this one, as well as the bright, desert sun peaking through in small bits. Also, it almost has the weird look of an endoscopy photo of an internal organ or something... or is it just me??
^^^Another neat one where the lighting plays around. If this one was turned sideways 90°, you can see where it would almost look like the horizon of a small mountainous landscape before a rising sun.
^^^This one was taken in a spot right near the one before it. I just thought it looked cool with a bit darker areas and more contrast.
^^^I also liked this one because it was one of the few with the stone being closer up. It allows you to see better the works created by water and winds. Beautiful.
^^^This is the last, and only, one that isn't looking straight up. This is what the canyon looks like on a walk through. Well, that's not 100% accurate. It normally looks just like this, but with dozens of tour goers going through the place. It took me quite a bit of waiting and lagging behind our group to get a shot with no people in it. It was worth it though. At least I caught a glimpse of Antelope Canyon in its natural form. :)
I hope you enjoyed these photos. Which was your favorite? Any suggestions of a name for it?? Maybe it can be the next "Phantom"!
