Healthy Christmas Cacti

Your Christmas Cactus should look like these (above) when in full bloom.

However, many look like this:

Here are some hints on caring for your plant so it is always healthy:

  • Christmas Cacti like bright conditions not in direct light.

  • Your plant likes a cool temperature so don't place it near heat vents, fireplaces or other sources of hot air.

  • Your plant does not like drafts.

  • Place the pot on a saucer filled with gravel and water as it likes humidity..

  • Make sure your Christmas Cactus is planted in a well draining pot with gravelly soil. Re-pot if necessary.

  • Do not let the soil dry out completely. On the other hand, do not over water.

  • Water you plant thoroughly. Before attempting to water the plant again, check to see that the top 2 cm of soil has dried. If so, it is ready to water again.

  • Water very lightly in winter.

  • Your plant will bloom when conditions are colder. After blooming stop watering for about 6 weeks to let the plant rest.
