Fog Bank on Maryland Beach Looks Like a Shelf Cloud
Visitors enjoying a nice day at a Maryland beach were treated to a spectacular sight in the atmosphere, but it was nowhere near as ominous as it appeared.
What Caused This Cloud?
East to northeast winds off the still-cool Atlantic Ocean plunged southward Tuesday along the Eastern Seaboard.
This was due to low pressure off the southern New England coast reinforced by outflow winds from a morning band of rain that pushed off the Jersey Shore.
As it advanced southward, that push of cool air wedged under warmer, moister air, lifting it up along its edge to form that cloud bank.
