Pony Swim on Chincoteague Island

in nature •  6 years ago  (edited)

It has been asked why they hold this event, the swimming of the ponies. They gather the herd and cull out many of the babies, as the island cannot support an endless number of horses. They selectively pick the babies that will go back into the herd, keeping the ones that have traits, such as blue eyes, perfect markings. unusual color... The ones that they want to be bred in. Assateague is separated by a small bay from Chincoteague, where the pony penning is held. They swim the mothers and other ponies back the day after the auction.

There would be no place to hold such an event on the island of Assateague.

The Saltwater Cowboy sits high on his saddle, waiting for the red smoke from the flare gun. This is the signal to all that the Pony Swim will begin. Despite the rainy weather, the people still hiked down to the beaches to watch the annual event.

The waiting crowd. The sun played peek-a-boo all day long. Of course, it rained during the important parts.

I look over and can see that the red flare has gone off. This is the signal to start the swim

The Salt Water Cowboys waiting over on the other side of the island, waiting for the tide. The went in at 8:17 because of the weather conditions. Nothing was unsafe about it. I apologize for the pictures. The camera is a piece of junk that I don't mind if it falls into the water. There was no way I was bringing my camera out here. Not until my allowance goes up and I can afford to replace it.

Some needed a little encouragement. Others knew the drill.

beautiful photography

Just lovely to see. It's almost like being there.

Oh dear, this race like unexpected and unusual to me, the horse swim and crossing the lake and people's are watching it, amazing!

Wow beautiful scenery...horses in the water........

So how do they actually get the ponies into the water @dswigle. Do the cowboys ride behind them and force them in? 😱

awesome photography
thanks for sharing

Looks like great fun... Well on a boat of course... Not on a horse for the Old Guy. No just tie up my boat and throw me a cold one while us boaters sing a verse or two with Toby Keith bout how we should of been cowboys lol.

Good to see you are having a good time in spite of the weather !

wow you saw this.. fantastic the way the horses swam.. omg

WOW, fantastic day. I wish I could be there. I love horses :) Greetings my dear nad have so much fun !!!

I loved horses growing up and often got books about them from the library. Yet, I have never followed through and rode one as an adult.

I still think they are beautiful/amazing creatures though. I bet there was a few magic moments watching them cross.

This is great .. :)

So many of them wow that's a treat to watch in real for sure great time you had there :)

When you say 'cull'. You don't mean they are for the chop do you?
Henry was a great find by the way 😊

I was wondering if the horses ever swim across of their own accord looking for adventure?

This was a marvelous event to capture and share @dswigle well done. 😊

Cull, as in they have to thin out the herd to keep the balance of the island. It can never support the thousands that would be there by now.

We love Henry! He is so intelligent, he was broke and trained in days. We did wait until he was old enough to ride before any real training. We let him have his kid fun. :) The horses do wander on and off the island, as there is no fence to keep them in or out.

I am so glad you liked the swim. There are a couple of posts leading up to it and the auction plus the swim back. I go every year and have for about 10 years, no matter where I live.
