The Flat-headed Cat
Today I bring you another feline that despite being very small and not as powerful as other felines, for me is one of the rarest that can exist, also thought for a long time that was extinct, I'm talking about the amazing flathead cat. Come with me to learn more about this incredible animal.
This is a unique species in its form because it moves a little away from the general characteristics of other felines in its form, its behavior is nocturnal and otherwise is very similar to the rest of the felines, its habitat is in different terrains such as peninsular areas, and tropical forests located in Malaysia, areas of Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo. They are fascinated by places where water is abundant because they spend a lot of time in rivers or streams.
Their size is very similar to that of domestic cats, although their size tends to be a little smaller, and their tail is smaller than in other wild cats. Their ears are small and round, their coat is a little thick and quite soft, they can present a beautiful reddish brown tone in the area of their head and in the rest of the body they can have dark brown tones with some white spots.
As for his eyes are quite powerful as in most felines, being very showy in his flattened head, which is also more elongated than in other cats, the colors of his coat make the head look even flatter than normal. That name was earned for a reason. Don't you think?
It also has limbs that are shorter than in other felines and on the other hand have long legs like those of his cousins like the cheetah, this cat has the ability to be a good hunter in the water, also has a powerful jaw with which they can hunt slippery prey like fish.
In its context we have that they can have a weight of 3 kilograms in the case of males and in the case of females can weigh only 1.5 kilograms of weight, the height and length is also uneven between both sexes, males are 50 centimeters maximum and females 37 centimeters long, which shows a clear sexual dimorphism.
In terms of sexual reproduction, there is very little information, we know things such as that the state of gestation in the female lasts 60 days, the little access to this species even restricts the visual material available for study. It is believed to have some things in common with other species such as a number of 4 puppies per gestation period.
Usually, this cat has hunting customs that are related in rivers, and areas of mud, in his diet can be found a variety of crustaceans, some fish and many frogs, especially crustacean. Thanks to its narrow nose and its flattened and elongated head they can submerge their head by 14 centimeters.
Regretfully this species has had many problems to survive in the Asian tropical forests, the main problem has been the generation of monkey oil palm crops, this has resulted in an exponential loss of its natural habitat. The population is currently estimated at about 2500 specimens, thanks to some conservation programs and thanks to the fact that it has been able to develop in the oil palm plantations, the owners of the plantations have committed themselves to take care of it and have created protection programs and awareness campaigns for others to support the cause.
