Polygyne Queen Ant Colony

in nature •  6 years ago

I had thought that one of the Queens had been assassinated back when I could only see the Ine Antennaed Queen.

I had thought this may happen as this species is normally a Monogyne style colony.
I had read a research paper where 2 queens tolerated each other until the colony was established and then chaos would ensue.

But, here they both were.
So, I still don't know how the Queen lost her antennae.

The brood is still being pumped out and they were happy feeding the larvae with a spider I threw in.

They really love the squishy soft spiders.

Here you can see dissected spider being placed amongst the larvae.
