A neighbor's ice covered tree glistens in the sun. More out back, below. If the wind blows and the branches move, it will sound somewhat like glass breaking.
The Ottawa Valley is often up to 2 C cooler than the surrounding area. When the temperature is near freezing, an interesting effect is rain can fall but turns to ice as it passes through the colder air in the valley. The result is a freezing rain that leaves a coating of ice on everything. Luckily, this was just a light rain - nothing unusual - and the ice will soon be gone, but in 1998, we had a famous ice storm. There was even a book written about it!
It may look like water on the vines, below, but it's a thin layer of ice.

It is dangerous to drive on such roads ...
A few years ago, when we were driving in a car (I, my cousin and with her husband) and the road was slippery, the car began to circle.
As a result, the car rolling over fell into a ravine! Strange ... but we did not suffer!
I was not scared at all, just firmly grabbed the handle of the car door so as not to fall upside down.
But my cousin was very scared and jumped out of the car in shock as soon as the car stopped rolling over.

We put sand and salt on our roads in winter to lessen that problem. For snow, we have snow tires. An ice storm can take down trees and wires and it can be dangerous to leave your car.

I once rode a bus following a bad storm and it passed through an old neighborhood of mature ice laden trees. It slowly wove back and forth across the street trying to avoid the dangling branches. During that storm, they were coming down and the bus hitting them sounded like they were about to fall!

It's not intense every day and we are prepared for it and dress appropriately. That makes a huge difference. I included a link at the bottom of the post to our great ice storm with photos - that was intense!
