Elk at the Lagoons

In northern California along the coast there is a beautiful area near Orick with three consecutive lagoons. The area has views of the ocean to the west and to the east you look towards the coastal range, it is an impressive area providing candy for the eyes and a sort of rejuvenation of the soul. As we passed through Big Lagoon we looked towards the coastal range and saw elk walking through the shallows.

We stopped and watched them for a long time. They continued a slow traverse through the water towards us, aware of our presence, but not seeming to mind us too much.

Seeing this many elk, in this setting with the lagoons behind us, the creek in front of us, the mountains beyond - an experience permanently etched into my memory.
