While waiting for someone who was attending a hospital appointment I had the opportunity to visit the "Henry Somerset Orchid Conservation Area". It was much better than sitting in a waiting room. It's late winter here and I'd hoped to find some early flowering native orchids. I did in fact find a couple but they had not fully opened. However I did come across an unusual fungi species that I'd not seen before. It is Hydnum repandum. It does not have gills on the underside like many fungi species and neither does it have pores. Rather, the underside is covered in soft, brittle spines. These spines are the fertile tissue where the spores are produced and released.
The specimen in the photo was only around 25 to 30mm in diameter. Apparent they can get to 100mm.
I did post another species with similar spines a couple of weeks ago. That one was called Pseudohydnum (in other words False Hydnum) so it was obviously named after the above Genus.
Here is a shot of Hydnum repandum showing the tooth like spines.

...and next is a shot from above. It has a slightly conical form narrowing down towards the stype.

Very exotic- looking mushroom. I've never seen similar before. Is it edible?

My books say it is edible. However, although I'm fairly certain of my ID I would never feel confident eating it :-)

Good eye! If only everyone would take time to observe the little things in nature and how every tiny organism has a place; I think most of us would have a better perspective of the big picture around us.

Gotta love the photoshoots that happen "organically" while killing time. Thanks for sharing!
