THE EASTERN HERCULES BEETLE

in nature •  5 years ago

Now this is an impressive scarab!

This is one of the largest and heaviest beetles in North America. A spotted and horned miniature beast of a beetle, the Eastern Hercules Beetle is quite the specimen. Afraid that you might one day get attacked by one....

Don't be, they aren't a threat to humans. After spending two years as a grub and then over-wintering in the earth or a rotted log, these interesting beetles emerge to live out their adult life. The males have the impressive horns, and these beetles can even mate for almost an hour... in case you wanted to know. Anyway, here's some photos we took prior to releasing this creature. Enjoy!

Super cool for sure!
the beetle was alright. :)

I only managed to come across a few of these in my whole life. Beetles are awesome, but not too many of them are as large as these.
