The Venus fly trap probably developed this ability in nutrient poor environments, to supplement its nitrogen and phosphorus intake. Let the digestion begin.

The chemical mechanism behind the flytraps movement involves the same hormone, jasmonic acid, that many other plants use for enzymatic defense against herbivores. This might mean that the plant adapted a defense mechanism into carnivory.
