When Most of us hear the word love bug we probably think of Herbie the love Bug! I really wish that I was here to talk about Herbie today, but not so.

Ah, there he is, see most of you probably remember now and some of you may cringe when you here the words "Lovebug". See for us Southern folks, love bugs stands for horror, aggravation, damaged cars and just an over all freakin nuisance.

Let me introduce you to the LOVEBUG - Plecia nearctica

The lovebug is a species of the March Fly found mostly in Central America and the Southeastern United States, especially along the Gulf Coast. ( thats me)

They have been called the Honeymoon fly or double head bug. The species was first described in 1940 by D.E. Hardy but was seen in Louisiana as early as 1911. At that time he reported that the incidence of lovebugs to be widespread but mostly common in Texas, Florida,Alabama,Mississippi and Louisiana. They appear twice a year in april-May and again in August-September.

At mating time swarms of Male lovebugs take to the air. Sperm-seeking females fly into the swarm, where they are quickly grasped by a partner and wisked off to a more romantic setting in the vegitation. After mating the pair remains entwined and together they head off on a honeymoon of sorts feeding on nectarand choosing a site for oviposition of the couples fertilized egg.....UNTIL THIS HAPPENS👇👇

See they like to swarm on major highways and roads. Causing all types of problems, lovebugs will mess up a cars paint job pretty quick if left unattended. They also seem to love windshields and at times a vehicle that is driving on a highway and runs into a swarm, could be faced with some serious visibility problems.
