The 2 Day January Thaw Followed By A Plunge Back Into FROZEN

in nature •  7 years ago

Believe it or not, this is not a black and white photo. This is exactly what I was looking at through pelting rain and above zero degree temperatures, which we had for 2 straight days.

Not only did the heavy rain take almost all of the snow in the process, it also took our first ice rink. In the far distance, you'll notice an ice fishing hut that has become a bit stranded...I wouldn't be walking out on the  thinning ice to rescue it (at this point) because it is not safe to do so.

When it snows and then switches to rain, it makes the snow exceptionally heavy as it starts to melt. To prevent structural damage, we watch these weather patterns really closely and we use a special rake to scrape the snow and ice off the roofs of our houses. The load can be too much otherwise and if you don't clear your eaves troughs (of the snow and ice) the melting water gets held up and won't drain away from your house properly. This can lead to internal flooding.

No kidding, it's a job but it needs to done, otherwise you'll have more jobs complete with huge repair bills to fix the damage.

After 2 days of above zero temperatures, the rain along with the January thaw increased the volume of water in the river. Then, the temperature plummeted to double digit below freezing temperatures again. With the wind chill, it was back to feeling like -23 degrees F. It is really hard on everyone when we have these huge swings in temperature and in conditions. Plus, it means more work to manage the ice and snow conditions. We must use salt and sand to try and prevent slips and falls. This is exceptionally important for parking lots and we usually have a rise in the number of fractures. No joints are safe from a slip on ice. Ankles, hips, tailbones, wrists and collar bones are regularly broken during these weather conditions.

You'll notice that the ice fishing hut didn't get taken by the river. This surprised me. I thought it would be "lost in the drink" for sure.

Based on the patterns of new ice, you'll notice how much the river flooded its banks during the thaw.

I captured this shot this morning. You'll notice the alignment of the sun between the trees and the sun-flare or small orb to the right of the sun, in the tree-line.

The timing is everything on a shot like this. The last 2 shots, I took a minute apart.

All photos were taken (by me) with an apple 8+ cell phone.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to follow me on my journey...from time to time we will be shoveling and raking snow.

That is all so beautiful to me. I miss the beautiful snow and ice being here in Florida. I do hate what the salt does to the vehicles though. Then if "everyone" doesn't take care. All the water and salt comes into the house too.
But, everyone soon learns to adjust to the conditions at that time. Or they should at least. And humans being individuals. Not everyone shares the same concerns and cares that maybe I would for example.
I am not a great house cleaner nor vehicle cleaner either. But I go to great lengths to avoid any dirt or contamination that I can. To save time on later cleanings. Ha That is why I would like Heaven or a heaven so well.
Once it is put in place and well arranged. It is perfection for all time.
Some might call that "lazy." Ha ha
Whatever. I do love your photos. Even though it is very cold looking.
Remember what Clif wrote about? "Mini ice age" coming your way.
It was even cool here today. I think it may have dropped to the 30's Fahrenheit for a short time. And for us. That is very cold. Coats were visible to be seen on the people. Yikes.
Thank you for showing us what you see and know.
It is so interesting and we all add to Steemit as we are able.
What will you be able to share with us next?
I think it will be totally awesome whatever it is.

Although snow and ice can make everything look beautiful, it can take a lot of work and time to fight it! And it's quite dangerous, because a lot of people are getting injured. I always tend to slip and fall down at least 5 times each winter, but luckily I haven't broken my bones yet :D The last 2 pictures are really really good! Nice way to catch the sun in between those trees :)

Great shots..

life become more taughf when temperature below frezzing level specially double digit, and always risk to get injured with several type bone broken. hope you will be fine and, and situation will be better in later.

Yes, with the weather that it happens. If it's winter then winter, and now it's possible to see rain in the middle of winter. You have very good photos. Thank you for sharing.

awesome photos. thanks for sharing @rebeccaryan

v.nice view

Yeah, we had similar swings in temperature where I am. Wasn't a problem in re the roof, but I did have to chop and shovel away some ice that had gotten on the patio stones near the drainpipe. Luckily, the temp. went high enough to mostly melt the ice before I cleared it.

When it snows and then switches to rain, it makes the snow exceptionally heavy as it starts to melt. To prevent structural damage, we watch these weather patterns really closely and we use a special rake to scrape the snow and ice off the roofs of our houses.

Some houses in Northern Ontario are designed with high-angle roofs to reduce that problem. Here's one that caught my eye:

The original part of the house is called an A-frame: the roof goes to the ground in order to get most of the snow to slide down.

It's a blessing that you didn't lose your ice-fishing hut!

Pretty awesome shots and it is looking pretty beautiful to look at the images and the environment !

I don't know if you've ever thought about entering any photo competitions or not, but you may want to if you haven't because you have definitely got all the stars lined up in your favor. The view that you have is just amazing. I know that I have said this before, but it seems like with every new picture you take, the view is different in some new way. Simply breathtaking!

That's a beautiful scene.

I have very little experience with snow, but I think what I've learned is that instead of having it melt a drop at a time inside my boots, I'd rather look at how pretty it is from inside a warm house.

I think I would take it over the constant cold rain here now though!

Oh my and I thought it was cold here. Tomorrow we should have a high of 20, then a high of around 60 for the weekend..which sounds much better.

Hey Rebecca is pretty cold there, at least if there is sun with all that white is good to get tan :D

Simply wow! Your photos are just wonderful my friend! I have never experienced such temperatures in my life!
