Koalas ice cold embrace of the tree

in nature •  7 years ago

Also the koalas sweat in the summer with their thick fur and lose so much water. But they do not stretch out all four of them, so the air cools them. The trunks and thick branches of the trees around them are cooler than the air. That is why koalabarians place their belly and arms as large as possible close to the trunk.

But not every part of the trees is equally cold: the thickest stems are relatively cool above the ground, the thinner branches higher up are somewhat warmer. The temperature also depends on the type of tree. Acacias are cooler than eucalyptus trees. According to the researchers' measurements, acaciae are colder than the surrounding air, and eucalyptus trees are only about two degrees cooler.
