What Can I Do With ALL These Cherries?

in nature •  7 years ago  (edited)

I moved into a new house this winter and just love it.  It's up on a hill overlooking the river.  Beautiful view and a nice yard with a good size cherry tree that is full, FULL, of wonderful looking cherries.

They are smaller than Rainiers and Bings and the are extremely bitter!  Not just sour like pie cherries or a Granny Smith apple, but bitter.

My cherries on the left, Bing on the right.

So I have a couple of questions for you if you know about these things, or even if you don't:

First question (two parts) 1a. What kind of cherries are they or, 1b. Where can I find out?

Second question, what can I do with these?  I don't want to invest a lot of time or resources into these if they can't be helped.

The third, and most pressing question to me...Who the hell plants a cherry tree variety that has inedible fruit!?!

I want to eat them all!

That's the thing. They look beautiful but they taste really bad. :-(

Add some sugar and make a pie :)

me too :)

I say make a big pie :P

You can use them for smoothies. Augment the taste with maple syrup or honey.

Awesome! I'm going to try it. Thanks!

👍

Are you sure they are all the way ripe? A lot of cherry varieties are sour and not sweet but make great pies or preserves!

Yep. They are falling off the tree ripe. And I wish they were only sour, it's really an acrid, bitter flavor.

interesting, have you tried cooking any?

Not yet, will do that this weekend and update

Eat them!

HA, I keep trying but like I said they are EXTREMELY bitter. Thanks for the tip though ;)

Maybe cooking them would help!
