Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo Abelii)

One of Sumatran Orangutan in the Gunung Leuser National Park ecosystem. Her name is Jackie. Compared with other Orangutans. She is friendly enough to humans.

According assessment of PHVA 2004, population and distribution of Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) is growing. The original prediction of 6,667 individuals, spread over 703,100 hectares of habitat, with altitude limits below 800 m above sea level, currently has an estimated population of 14,470 in a habitat of 2,155,692 hectares.

Sumatran orangutans can also be found in habitats of 1,500 m above sea level and spread over 10 meta populations, and only two populations are predicted to be sustainable over the next 100-500 years. The habitat is a release site in Jantho Aceh Tenggara and Bukit Tigapuluh in Jambi.
