Fishing with young Ben again today and he found a nest of wasps.

These are one of the species of Australian Paper Wasp. Their nest is made of chewed up plant material, regurgitated to form cells.

As Ben discovered, they are somewhat protective of the home turf...

And he left his rod lying right under them... I was none to keen on retrieving it, for good reason.

My finger still stings a bit. But they aren't too bad. Bees would have been worse.

Looks pretty dangerous

Haha, in Australia they are way down the list of dangerous. At least these buggers won't kill you with a sting!

That's some great photos buddy :) You were lucky - it's not your drinking hand LOL

It is my retrieve hand though.

Got into some nice redfin just before sundown. Nothing really solid, but about a pound to a pound and a half. Landed around a dozen in a short period, after fishing all afternoon for bugger all result! Ben got one around 3pm, then just alot of short strikes and sucking on the bread bait, not taking them. Clear water...better night time fishing I would be guessing. Less bait shy.

Dang Paper Wasps. My most recent sting was from two of them that had built a nest under a chair seat that I happened to sit down on! Hurt like the devil.
I'm sympathizing with both of you!

Thank you. At least we each only got the one sting. Would really hate to have upset the whole nest!
