Clippers Trade Blake Griffin to Pistons

Clippers and Pistons Make Blockbuster Trade

ESPN Insider Adrian Wojnarowksi has confirmed via his NBA sources that the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons have agreed on a deal that will send superstar Blake Griffin to Detroit in exchange for Avery Bradley and Tobias Harris. The full deal is as follows: The Pistons receive Blake Griffin and the Clippers receive Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, a 1st-round pick and a 2nd round pick. The first round pick will be protected 1-4 every year until 2021 in which it will become unprotected and the 2nd round pick will be in 2019. It's unlikely that the pick will fall inside the top four this year so we can all assume that the pick will be in this year's upcoming draft.

The trade is really the first big news of this year's trade-deadline as it has been relatively quiet. Many believed that the Clippers would continue to build around Griffin and look to move DeAndre Jordan and Lou Williams, but the Clippers felt that the deal gave them enough to move their most valuable asset and face of the franchise since the departure of Chris Paul last year. While Woj is reporting that the Clippers are still looking to move Williams and Jordan, the Clippers have solidified themselves as sellers at the deadline despite being just one games out of the 8th seed in the Western Conference.

The Pistons on the other hand seem to have shifted into a much more "win-now" mode with the trade. Giving up assets Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley is tough, but there aren't a multitude of opportunities to grab a superstar like Blake Griffin often. The Pistons are currently three games back of the Philadelphia 76ers for the final playoff spot in the East, but the move to grab Griffin will likely force them into the playoffs, assuming Griffin can stay healthy. Harris was the Pistons' leading scorer, but Griffin should slot nicely into the power forward roll alongside center and All-Star snub Andre Drummond. Griffin has experience playing with athletic bigs as he has been paired with DeAndre Jordan for many years and the two have built a nice report together.

I would be on the lookout for Los Angeles to work hard to move Lou Williams and DeAndre Jordan at this point as the Clippers will more than likely tank this season in hopes of starting a youth movement within the franchise. With the first big move of this year's trade deadline season behind us, hopefully the dominoes will begin to fall and more deals will be made.

I am not sure what Clippers are doing. Unless they are trying to free cap space to bring Lebron in next year. lol That is very much unlikely to happen. Or maybe Paul George after his contract expires in OKC. They were never a true contender in the first place and they just sold their best asset. Who knows maybe they just want to get best for him while they can because he is injured a lot. If that is the case then they got a good deal for him.

At least this is my humble opinion. :)

My thinking is that if the Clippers can get rid of DeAndre and Lou Williams as well, they would easily be a bottom 5 team and compete for a high draft pick. I don't think Griffin is really as good as most people think. He hasn't been able to stay on the court nor win without another star.

If they do so I don't see them getting into playoffs for another 5 years at least. Even if they get low enough to contend for top picks. I think they are going to Paul George next year. It is the only "realistic" thing they can get. If they rebuild with young players it is going to be a long process for them as they have no young base whatsoever right now to add drafts picks too. But, let's wait and see what happens. Either way, I don't see them as contenders or even a playoff team for the next couple years.

I need to stop by more on your profile. There are not very many basketball fans here on Steemit. And, I play professionally in Europe, and of course love basketball. :)

Have a great day, my friend. :)

Brandon & Awakentolife-

I have an NBA Podcast channel & am new to STEEMIT. Been recording on the app anchor for the past several months and built up a following there. Trying to get involved with the community here, If you are ever interested in linking up for a podcast to talk NBA Hoops let me know. Now is a great team with NBA Trade Deadline around the corner!

Hey @toddcast. :)

That is an awesome thing you are doing. We do need more sports talk on Steemit. I would love to join, but I am not sure if I would have the time for it. As I usually have two practices a day and the rest of the time running the group on Steemit plus trying to write some post of mine. But, I can try to find some time. :)

No worries my friend! I would love to still be hooping like that twice a day. If you get some free time hit me back.

Hey @toddcast. That sounds like an awesome idea and I would love to help you out. Why don't you message me on discord or steemit.chat and we can talk individually.

Brandon-

Just created a Steem.it chat name. Still under toddcast, just sent you a message through the platform. Feel free to reach out, things should start getting exciting post Super-Bowl. The trades will be flowing!

Griffin is an injury machine. He broke his left kneecap, had surgery, and missed the entire 2009-10 season after being drafted first overall.

He has missed time with back spasms, a torn left quad, a staph infection, broken hand, right knee surgery, a broken toe, a sprained left MCL since.

In the first year of a five-year, $171 million deal with the Clippers, they realized building a franchise around him wasn't the best move.

He has never proven that he is a winner & he is one of the most disliked players in the NBA as he constantly complains & often finds himself fighting opposing coaches. The Clippers need to rebuild and this is a good start. I wouldn't be surprised if DeAndre Jordan and Lou Williams are next.

**Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, A 1st & 2nd round pick next year. That is more value then they deserved for him.

It's a smart trade for the Clips to build for the future. Get two starters back and a couple picks. The question, I would think, now becomes what're they asking for Lou and Jordan? Too much? Lou's having a career year so he is the quintessential sell-high candidate.

Great trade. Blake on the east is even better!

I don't see how Andre Drummond & Blake Griffin mesh, but hey they will have a good 10+ days during the All Star break to figure it out. Lets see what you can pull together Stan!

Excellent movement of Detroit. Maybe with healthy Griffin they can be much more competitive in the East.

I actually think it's a good trade for the Clippers. They have a lot more depth, they are getting draft picks. They'll be able to play Harrell and Tobias and should be able to get somewhat close production, and they also got Avery Bradley who is a great defender. I can see why the Pistons traded for Blake, of course, but I personally think they gave up to much!

LOL Too funny. Knowing our luck, Pistons will finish 7th, Raptors 2nd and then we get him and Drummond in the first round ;)

Nah, seriously...Guess they are calling it quits this year (The Clips) and trying to stash some draft picks. Not sure how I feel about it, and it might take a day or two to process LOL

But Blake is hurt a lot....Is that too much for him simply because of injury concerns?

both teams gave a lot, hard to know who came out winning griffin detroit reinforce the pistons and will make them more competitive. bradley and harris in clippers will try to fill a large space, thinking about the reconstruction of the team

Clippers did a great job getting out of Blake’s contract. I never understood the fascination with Blake. I can’t believe they are going to blow the whole thing up by letting go of DJ and Lou Will.
If they do....I think they could rebuild quicker than people think.
Thanks @brandonp for getting us some quality hoops posts. On the trade front....what do you think of my Celts possibly picking up Tyreke Evans as a rental to give us that much needed bench scorer?
