Hello, Needleworkers! I haven't done much in my studio for several months, until my son discarded some old jeans. I hit Pinterest for ideas, and saw this method of doing a modified Cathedral Windows quilt using recycled denim circles plus accent squares.
I drafted a 6" circle, a 4 1/4" square, and a 4" square on cardboard to use as templates. I cut out a bunch of denim circles from the jeans, then raided my stash of upholstery samples for the accent squares. I even cut a few circles from the upholstery samples so that the back of the quilt would have more variety. I just took my time fussy-cutting out medallions etc until I amassed the quantity you see above, around 40. I still have loads of other fabrics I plan on incorporating as the quilt grows.
I decided to build the quilt into ninepatches. So here is the first one I set up.
I used the 4" template to chalk the seam lines and sewed a chain of three circles. Then I placed the 4 1/4" accent squares within the seam allowances, finger-pressed them open, and stitched flat with a zigzag.
(Some people like to iron on fleece batting under the squares for extra body and warmth. Some like to fringe the seam allowances for extra texture. Since mine will include fraying, nubbly upholstery circles, I thought it best to skip the batting, plus zigzag all of them down uniformly.)
With three horizontal chains of three circles each, I matched the seams and sewed them together.
With each additional row sewn, I repeated the finger-press and zigzag process.
I really like how it is working out, with the lovely circles framing the pops of color inside. The back comes out with a pretty spiffy 4" square checkerboard, too. It is such an easy process for simultaneously creating the quilt front and back!
Cheers, and happy needlecrafting!
Love,cat

I've got a few dozens of upholstery samples and plan to make small bags out of them, project bags for knitting and crochet. Since I just started sewing again they provide cheap material :)

Yes! They make fabulous bags, don't they? I made some totes out of the samples one year for a multi baby shower. And I still have lots left. Mine are kind of outdated (90s aesthetic?) but that is minimized once they are patchworked. Cheers and thanks!
